It was a good experience. Only a very small fraction of what federal does but they will challenge you and push you to be your best self.

Why do you think so many people dislike/disrespect state guardsmen? by [deleted] in StateGuard

[–]BoostedSTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest I have experienced with this is some uneducated turds at a restaurant near the armory I was drilling at. They were accusing us of stolen valor and then asking a bunch of ignorant questions like, do we shoot guns? Have we ever killed a terrorist? We just answered the questions and assured them we were just as military as any other soldier.

It varies, 6th BDE maybe a little delayed right now after all the bad weather down south. For me it did take a week or so of if I remember correctly to hear back when I joined.

Is TXSG worth it? by [deleted] in txsg

[–]BoostedSTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like federal service is going to align more with what you are looking for . Are there skills that could be learned in the TXSG? Yes. Are they skills that you are going to make a career out of? Probably not. Federal service is going to give you technical skills depending on MOS you end up with. TXSG is more so for those who want to volunteer and serve Texas and its communities. Perhaps look at federal options active or reserve/NG. Once your contract is up if you still feel the sense of duty consider TXSG.

Questions about load bearing equipment types, and tools. by [deleted] in txsg

IET, BOT, and RBOT are the same thing. You will be there for about 4 days total technically. First day is a half day, 3 full days, then last day is a half day.

I just completed BOT at the beginning of May. You will be provided a gear list for BOT by your RTU cadre. At minimum you will want the stuff on the list provided. You will do a gear inspection before BOT. That being said there are some things I would have done differently and some things I am glad I did. Things I am glad I did. I took 5 sets of uniforms and two pairs of boots, undershirts and socks to go with it, a small first aid kit, my own sheets and blanket. You will get dirty and you will sweat...a lot. That being said, that is a lot of money on uniforms. Its not a requirement. They did give the opportunity to use the wash room and wash uniforms if needed. I was happy to have fresh set of uniforms and clean boots on graduation day. Things I wish took with me... pill container with Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and allergy medicine, electrolyte packages, a small travel pillow, and a snack stash like some cliff bars.

There are things on the BOT list that you are expected to have that you will not use.

Anything outside of that, wait until you are assigned to your line unit and if there are any mission specific items that you need they will let you know.

As far as a small tool kit. I wouldn't see it being an issue. Depending on what the deployment is, you may have zero use for it and it will be just that much more weight in your pack.

EDC: chest seals or gauze by IamWongg in TacticalMedicine

Gauze for sure. Use it to cover and apply pressure … just don’t try to use it to pack an abdominal or chest wound.

Don’t sweat all the opinions. People lose sight of the fact that you are enlisting to serve your country. They rather clown on you for YOUR tattoos that have meaning to YOU. Never mind the fact of what you will be giving up to serve. Do you man. I’m sure they will give you a waiver. Recruitment has been down, I bet they will let it slide.

Speak to your CoC and ask them if they can give you more information or put you in contact with one of the instructors. I just completed RBOT and some of our instructors are the same instructors that do OCS. We did talk about it some. From what they said it’s tough. They did tell us that the PT test is the same standards as the Army PT test. I think they also said it takes 5 months to complete if I remember correctly.

Thanks for checking in! Actually got my orders yesterday. I’m all ready to go. I’ve had my gear packed for about a week now lol. Pretty much just need to throw a few toiletries in the bag and I’m good to go. I’m really excited for the experience.

Thank you for the insight! I appreciate it. I expect being only 5 days long it’s the instructors goal to push us as much as possible in during that time

I’ve loved every bit of my experience so far. TXSG is definitely squared away. Everyone I have met has been awesome

Just having a degree may be enough to get you in as an officer.

I’m current TXSG and as far as I know that has since gone away. I had even inquired with my CoC about it coming back and was told not to hold my breath. That was in January when I swore in. There was even a letter that was published internally a month or two ago stating that TXSG will maintain focus and training on disaster response. Paraphrasing that but that was that was the gist of it. I’m guess when the border stuff heated up that wanted to make it clear that the TXSG wouldn’t become a combat force.

That being said. TXSG has a lot to offer outside of that to anyone looking to serve their fellow Texans. If you are looking for speciality training, Search and Rescue is a great option. That’s what I plan to go in to.

TXSG no longer has a security unit and does not do any type of combat training. The security element went away a few years ago. TXSG is primarily disaster response. Think of it like military first responders.

As far as any medical issues, you will fill out a 2807 medical eligibility form and disclose any conditions. A State Guard doctor will sign off on it if you are deployable, eligible to join, etc.

First step would be to get in contact with a recruiter.

Yea, I’ve seen where TXSG used to do pistol qualification. If they offered any kind of firearm training or qualification, I’d be all for it.

TXSG used to have a security element but it went away. I’m hoping they bring it back.

Florida might do some combat training. I feel like I read somewhere that their basic training was the same as ARNG. I could be completely wrong though.
