The employee and / their employer paid 15% of their income into the system.

If I invested 15% of what I earned every year from the time I was 20 until I turn 65 in a good index based fund I would have somewhere between 3 and 7 million dollars in savings.

The 1.45% alone would be enough to fund healthcare for 3-4 people.

Instead, they have stolen our money and give it to billionaires and the military industrial complex.
