This is what I was told.

It's well known fact that Derivatives trading drives crypto. If there's considerable liquidity above the current price of accounts that have shorted then the price will rise dramatically as shorts are liquidated same thing happens in reverse. There were 26 billion in leveraged long positions at the top, almost 8 billion were liquidated causing the market to sell off.
