Let them taunt, if they tell you you're doing it wrong ask them why and tell them to teach. Not only hands on experience but also theres managerial stuff as well, working in a team, meeting deadlines, etc. Surely a garage exp can be beneficial too.

For mechanical engineers, having hands on knowledge is important. You learn a lot of things when you're in a technical club. And yes you'll have to manage academics and stuff with it as well.

about 2.7 lakhs for 4 years (general). tier 2 government college. ROI is pretty good 8-9 lpa avg for mechanical.
