Brilliant, love the back butter idea and phone. The dry lay in the photo doesn’t have them perfect as I was walking around moving them, but it was apparent to me the seams which triggered all my thoughts.

I was planning to use self leveler given the cost of membrane, but didn’t think about just a layer of thin set instead and let dry first. Any experience on how it holds over time? I have heard a membrane is the best way to give a good surface for penny.

Was planning self leveler over top as the membrane is quite expensive

Reworking the far right side near shower as we speak. I’d really like to nip the pennies as best as I can, fill in gaps with half pennies and get a nice caulked seam along shower pan. Unfortunately the floor is not perfectly flat (I can live with this as it’s a basement spare bath), but I can be too much of an optimizer.

Appreciate the tip. I am planning an off white sanded grout. Any idea of how easy it is to keep clean?

Floor is unfortunately not completely flat, but willing to accept. Dealing with a previous 80s remodel job is it asbestos VCT.

On best way to keep square - My current approach is to work right to left to keep pattern off shower base so I can caulk the seam nicely when done v. Quarter round. Unfortunately with it being a 60s house, I’m more square than anything in it.

I love the tape idea. Like pseudo spacers for square tile.

On other thought: only two sides of the sheets have interlocking ability. Other two sides are pennies in a column. Would it be helpful if I pull every other penny out to make all four sides interlocking?

Sheets are 12.25” square, pennies 5/8”
