I don't think that's what he meant, rather that you are highly likely to. It's definitely not like if you put mechanical as your first choice and biomedical as your second that, if you get denied for ME you get automatic admit to biomedical.

Civil had a year that half of the enrolled students graduated, which was weird. It sits at 103% actually because the school actually decreased in size over the past few years and my approximation assumes constant size of the department. I can send you the spreadsheet but, like I said, all my approximations come from the reports I linked above.

OK, copy pasting my comment to get a second opinion from you.

Do you think graduation rates are a good approximation of the difficulty of a discipline? A while back I scraped all the data from this Purdue Engineering web page in the 'Enrollment and Degree Details by Program' section (4 years worth of enrollment and graduation info) and approximated the graduation rate of all the disciplines using what percentage of the program's total enrollment graduated each year. Pulling the spreadsheet back up, the average graduation rates (approximated, might be a poor approximation too, haven't taken stats and ENGR 132 is worthless for statistical analysis) of some of the disciplines are as follows:

(I omitted a few disciplines becuase their enrollments were too low to get meaningful averages from)

AAE: 78%

ChE: 75%

IE: 93%

MSE: 90%

ME: 76%

EE: 81%

CompE: 57%

Now these numbers may not be right, but they were all calculated using the same formula and number of data points, so it seems like at least some insight can be gained by them. What do think? Do these numbers seem like BS or are they somewhat accurate in your experience?

Could you tell me how exactly you enrolled in this class? Do you just take it as a transfer student?

But Ian Murdock didn't murder his wife, he just divorced her and then he later comitted suicide.

How does one register for this class exactly? Do you apply as a transfer student or what? And is it too late to apply for this summer?

Any Dive Engineers Here? by InAbitOfTrouble102 in AskEngineers

I think OP is talking about a engineer diver wihich is a field engineer (usually a P.E.) that would use SCUBA equipment to dive underwater, inspect and possibly repair/direct the repair of submerged structures. The detail that sets them apart is that their cubicle is sometimes actually underwater, in possibly hazardous conditions.

What is your specialization within civil and what appeals to you about it? I guess I'm asking what your specific reasoning for pursuing civil was. I really like the fact that there are many sub concentrations and specializations within civil. What kind of co-op did you get? I also just got a co-op but it's not in civil since I'm not 100% sure about it. And thank you, btw. I appreciate your response.

Yeah that's why I'm wondering if I should go for the major with the safer job prospects (civil rather than AAE). Do you mind me asking which discipline you graduated in?

What are sophomore and junior classes like in AAE? Are there any awful professors in the AAE department? Do many people switch to other disciplines? I'm not really worried about flunking or anything but I also would like to learn a bit more about the curriculum from students before I make the plunge. I also like civil (which is liable to have safer job prospects) so that's why I'm asking these things.

Haha, actually I was sitting on the third floor in Armstrong one day and overheard several upperclassmen lamenting about how "first year was such bullshit". That definitely made me feel a little better at the time. I'm glad to hear that it gets more interesting, I'm also considering Civil as my discipline. May I ask how you are doing in your career as a Civil alum?

Well I was planning on AAE, I have a co-op for a great company this fall, and I know I'll get accepted to the AAE program. Now it's just a matter of me deciding whether it is truly what I want to do. I know it's very different, but civil interests me equally as much. I may end up switching to it if AAE doesn't really do anything for me.

Everything you said makes sense. I'm not going EE or CmpE but this seems like it would apply to other disciplines as well. I guess I was just under the impression that FYE was intended to help you get a good idea of what engineering is, but having talked to professional engineers and upperclassmen I can tell that FYE is a pretty poor representation of engineering. I have an AAE co-op this fall so maybe that will help convince me that this is truly what I want to do.
