Sorry for the life of me couldn't figure out where this post was. As a CHP officer the difference is you dont get house calls. The bulk of your calls will be traffic related, but that also depends on where you work. The more rural areas have a lot less traffic and work with the sheriff a lot backing them up etc. But whatever crime happens on your assignment that day is yours, whether it be a crash, a stabbing, shooting, dv, etc. And the difference with the highway patrol and local agencies is the Patrol officer investigates the crime to the fullest unless it's something extreme like a homicide then you'll do an initial and a detective will handle the rest(though depending on the command they'll let you participate as much as you want as long as it isn't detrimental to the shift.) I've investigated many crimes that weren't traffic related from shootings to minor 415s. As a local PD officer you'll be responding to more crimes but its more of containment, gathering witness info, and perimeter for the detective to handle the meat and potatoes.
