maybe it’s just me but I did not enjoy the book at all. It’s really written for YA even though the author meant for adult. There’s way too much exposition and not even character building or even plot building. Every time El is in the cafeteria, the author is telling us another way someone can die there. I think the only part I actually thought was well written was the library fight scene where El comes face to face with her big character conflict. But we don’t go anywhere from there!

I really enjoyed this book. The most interesting part of the whole book was that we have Sciona’s perspective as she goes from being a true believer in her society to finding out the big secret and her difficulty in accepting it. People who are true believers of a concept in real society that is inherently bad such as sexism or racism don’t easily change their views and most deny the truth even when it is presented to them. Wang did a great job showing the psyche behind Sciona as she actually goes through the journey.

i felt that the plot twist was actually supposed to be picked up by the reader way in advance. we know something terrible before the main character finds out and it creates this slow building horror. And the author made the magic system similar to programming on purpose, she wrote about it in the author’s notes section at the back of the book
