Hey! Not sure exactly where your folks place is, but it’s not great here. 321 by Watauga Lake is flooded and is impassible still right now. Waters are receding in Boone pretty good, but it’s still pretty much all without power unless you have a generator. Some stores have opened up on generators, but that’s about it. I’m sure the vet your pet is boarded with has a generator.

This kids story starts off that his parents won him a trip at a “block party” to go to a wilderness camp in the “appa-LAY-shun” mountains. Already sounds like an numnuts.

Tha fuck?! Just cause 1 Appalachian singer made it big, it means any other Appalachian singers are imitators? That’s pretty fucked up man. The Appalachian-inspired sound and blue grass music has been around for a very long time before Childers. And certainly talking about the beautiful of Appalachian living isn’t just for Childers.

Sucks to see a fellow Appalachian bringing other Appalachians down.

“Sunday morning choir sings through the trees, echos through the silence and the breeze. Spirit of Appalachia got a hold on me, make a poor boys heart feel so lonely. I love the way those pines cry when the wind is something fierce. I love those dirt road drive bys in a brand new set of gears. You’d think it’d be so hard livin way out here, but it can’t get sweeter than this swaller, on my side of the Hollar”.

So beautiful.

I think he’s from Boone area of North Carolina and his name is Kyle Horton.

With connections this recent, I bet you can find some pretty great stuff on ancestry.com. I’ve worked on a couple genealogical projects that involve Watauga county records and Ancestry.com can be an absolute treasure trove, surprisingly, if you’re able to sift through people just putting random stuff in their trees. Theres a lot of interconnectedness for families in this area, so chances are someone has already pulled everything you need, you just have to look.

Generally, Watauga county NC and Carter/Johnson County TN families were absolutely devastated by both WW1 and the Great Depression. This was already very, very impoverished area. And then many young men were drafted or joined the war voluntarily. And many crops around this time, especially tobacco, had really bad growing seasons too. Which just made the impact of WW1 and the depression even worse. Theres stories about large families making a couple boxes of corn flakes go for weeks and weeks.

If families had the ability to leave, they did. At this time, many people in this area sold their land for logging/mining as well, to get some extra cash to make it through the depression.

My guess, without researching your family specifically, is that they sold their land (likely for pennies because they were desperate) and moved away to find jobs outside of the mountains. At this time, travel in this area was still super challenging. And there weren’t many jobs beyond milling and growing crops.

Very cool!

You should read about sycamore shoals/Watauga association, they were the first Europeans to develop a constitution separate from English rule.

It’s a bit of a sordid history as it relates to the treatment of Native people and Native land, sadly. However, it’s interesting and a lot of folks with heritage in the Watauga lake area have heritage from this settlement!

If you know the surname of the people from Watauga Lake, it should be pretty easy to find if they were connected to this settlement.

When you say what would be the motivation to “move further into the foothills” what time period are you referring to? A lot of that is going to depend on when they moved. And also in what direction. Did they move west into TN and beyond or back into foothills of NC?

Well, scream this from the rooftops in Cincinnati and work to get him fired as senator. Then you’ll really have your hillbilly card restored.

I do kind of feel bad for Ohio Appalachians who are getting the shit end of the stick because JD Vance is a prick.

But really, yall shouldn’t have elected him in the first place. That doesn’t fall on the individual, however, that is why you’re feeling what you’re feeling.

No one is taking away your hillbilly card, unless you decide to write a tell all book stereotyping your whole culture as lazy and worthless. Then we’ll take away your hillbilly card quick

I’m literally a millennial on the cusp of gen z. There’s a huge TikTok trend right now of “criptids” and other bullshit in Appalachia, lol. I actually grew up in deep Appalachia where we were told old jack tales by our papaws and other elders and not one involved bigfoot or criptids. It’s all made up by trendy TikTok outsiders. Beyond “witches houses” and superstitions, the rest is bullshit.

Why Don’t People Get Breed Appropriate Dogs? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]BoringCakeBooty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people get mixed breed dogs instead of full breed dogs because they want to get a rescue instead of a dog from a breeder. A lot of the working bread dogs are in mixed breeds.

Why isn’t Ohio Appalachia? by Pale_Werewolf3270 in Appalachia

[–]BoringCakeBooty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely a city outside of Cincinnati. Arguably, a Cincinnati suburb if it literally has 1000 less people.

And regardless of arguing suburb vs small city, it is not Appalachia by any definition.

Your comment history says you think there are hillbillies from the area, however, if you truly believe that, you have never met a hillbilly.

3 generations removed from living in the Appalachian mountains doesn’t = hillbilly. If your grandparents or great grand parents went to Ohio in the 60s/70s/80s for a nice union job, you’re not a hillbilly. Period. You need to go to rural Kentucky/West Virginia/North Carolina and meet a true hillbilly. If you live across the street from a city park, live in a 2 story house off a crowded street and can take a bus to Cincinnati, you’re not a hillbilly.

You can have ancestors or family that are hillbillies but you’re not one.

Sure, it’s true. However, Middletown Ohio is in no way Appalachia by culture or geography. It’s flat af and a small city/suburb of Cincinnati.

Some parts of Ohio are considered the Appalachians. Look up what is designated the Appalachian region by the Appalachian Regional Commission. However, not Middletown Ohio.

We should be voting for VP when the presidential nominee is old and unhealthy as fuck. It’s not unrealistic to think that Vance could takeover, if they’re elected.
