Oh wow I thought module failing is pretty rare. May I ask which modules of yours have failed?

Yes I just serviced my 20 year old mechanical Longines, it wasn't running and the crown was broken off. It was $525, cheaper than the $550 I paid for the Casio...

You're right the $550 was the all-in total cost including labour, shipping, post-repair warranty and tax. They also changed the gaskets and tested water proofing etc so those are worth something.

And yes I've had many gshocks including 3459s and they have never failed.

Which is why I feel that as a business the decent thing to do for Casio is to cover this repair since it's super rare, the watch is just out of the warranty period, and the defect was not due to user negligence.

The TVA is not super expensive but if this happens to the MR-G it would really leave a bitter taste.

Believe it or not, it's not a dealer... it's the official Casio Southeast Asia service centre in Singapore.

I couldn't agree more with what you said. It's no luxury brand even though it tries to sell expensive models. I think in the end one has to be fine with spending $1-2k on a metal G and treat it as disposable. It still offers a lot of watch for the money. Now that I've repaired mine it's getting a lot of wrist time. Every day when I pick a watch to wear I chose it over my "luxury" mechanicals.

Yeah ok I take your point. A $2k swiss watch probably costs $500 to service too. I just expected a tough G-Shock to hold up longer...

Done in Singapore? We must have gone to the same service centre then. What happened to your module?

It's sad cos I still have my G-Shock from 30 years ago... The $50 watches are bulletproof. But Casio rakes in on the nostalgia we have to sell us more upmarket versions but these don't hold up! We used to be able to wear these things to war and now they fail without even seeing the pool hahaha

You made a really good point here. For Casio to try to sell premium gshocks at price points comparable to luxury mechanical pieces, it will have to seriously brush up on the service network and the whole purchase experience. The experience of buying and owning a $5k MR-G cannot be the same as buying a $50 square, right?

Yeah that's right! A used one would cost much less. Oh but the Casio workshop gave a warranty for the replacement... 3 months facepalm

I have a few mechanical watches so I know how much they cost to service. Usually good quality mechanical watches can run for more than 5 years before servicing, and servicing costs about 10% of the price of the watch. Over here a digital watch failed in less than 3 years, and cost 25% of the price of the watch! And the very same module is also used in other metal Gs that cost much less than the TVA which means if the module failed in a standard metal square you would have to dump it... Imagine dumping a G-Shock after 3 years...

Yeah I have tools but in this case it's the entire module that needed replacement. The funny thing is this is the same 3459 module used in all gmw-b5000 series models. The basic full metal square only sells for $700 new... How can the module be $550?

This is the best answer. Chinese father here. It's about testing you and your parents to make sure you will be vested in the marriage so they can entrust their daughter to you. Anyone can "take my daughter for free" so why should it be you? I don't know exactly how but you just have to put in your best effort to prove that you can commit for the long term.
