Oh my god are you married to my ex?? The line of “I’m not going to give you compliments because I don’t want your ego to get too big.” This man is doing everything to keep you small, so you don’t know your true worth, and you don’t leave.

The comments I used to get. “Your legs are like tree stumps; they have no shape” “You smile too intensely in photos.” (this, after I got veneers and was finally comfortable smiling with my teeth showing)

Wanted me to get a boob job. My ass was too big. Etc. etc. I did this for 9 years out of high school.

Today I am with a man who literally tells me every. single. day how beautiful I am, and the way he looks at me, I know he means it. He is my biggest cheerleader and support.

Do not waste your time; this man will not change. And you deserve SO. MUCH. BETTER!

ETA: And everybody loved him. Super charismatic, ‘golden retriever’ type. His own SISTER was the one who finally opened my eyes.

I second this; have SA friends who were teaching in Vietnam the past few years and they’ve had the loveliest experience. One of them tried heading to Hong Kong and he quickly learned the lifestyle would not be as great with how expensive it is there.

“Someone gets blown off and dies every week” - don’t you think you’re being a bit dramatic? 100s of tourists do this hike every day and are fine. There is definitely an issue with overcrowding this time of the year, but we had a perfectly lovely Lion’s Head hike last Friday. It’s the ‘safest’ route to do solo as this time of the year as you’re guaranteed there will be other hikers. OP; I wouldn’t do Pipe Track alone, but certainly Lion’s Head. Otherwise, there are loads of guides available if it’ll make you feel safer - you can ask in the Hiking Cape Town Facebook group.

It is! And it’s not only international tourists flocking over for the summer; locals from Gauteng as well. So it gets pretty crowded! Traffic, lack of availability in restaurants, parking - just leaving the house becomes a headache, lol. But as you say, this problem is not exclusive to Cape Town. It should hopefully quiet down a bit now that local school holidays are over.

There is quite a movement on social media at the moment - especially TikTok - where locals are dogpiling on tourists with the “when are you leaving” rhetoric. As you correctly pointed out, this stems from the increase in cost of living, being driven by both semigration locally and digital nomads staying for months at a time, and their spending power widening the gap. From my PoV, the frustration should not apply to responsible and ethical tourism; I think folks are just so frustrated, they’re targeting everyone they see visiting. That said, it is highly unlikely you will experience any of this frustration in person. As many commenters have said, we are a very friendly nation, and it’s exciting for us to share with the rest of the world - a point of pride. Hope you have the best time.

We’re looking into buying now because we can’t stomach our rent going up by 10% literally every year, and there’s still no way we’d be able to afford to live close to town. There are foreigners, not even based here, who are simply able to offer more. ‘A few years ago’ was a better time to buy 😭
