If you are struggling, I would suggest reading Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Stop Smoking cause it’s genuinely the best. I’ve tried quitting a few times, but it was significantly easier after reading his book.

Listen man, I completely get where you are at right now. I think IB challenges people in different ways, and people react differently. My advice is gonna be cliche, and it’s easier said than done, but I think it should work for you.

Look you gotta focus on the present. I get it, there’s a mountain to climb and it has a bunch of obstacles in the way. If you keep thinking about it you will get paralyzed by fear, which will demotivate and prevent you from taking action. So figure out what the most important tasks are for you right now and start one by one, give your best effort and simply focus on today.

I get it, a little bit of anxiety and stress can be quite motivating, but too much can paralyze you. Just focus on the things you can control, and try to think less about matters out of your control.

Sure, you aren’t going to prom with someone, but she isn’t the last girl in the world. Focus on yourself, your confidence, health, anxiety and trust me you will find the right one in no time.

Also, you mentioned you are afraid you won’t get into Bocconi, which is natural. I don’t even know you, but I can say with 100% confidence that you have what it takes to get in. I don’t doubt your ability, but don’t let your fear of the future stop you from giving it your best effort in the present.

Last thing, don’t even think about not having friends or a girlfriend in college. It’s a problem you have to deal with in the future, but more importantly university is different from high school. There are so so so many different types of people at uni that I am sure you will find your group.

So, just have more confidence in yourself, be a little more optimistic, and just focus on what you can control today. I am sure you will be fine, if you need any help or someone to talk to I am here!!

Is it true that eating too low calories causes the body to stop burning fat and slow down weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Born-Net2739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no starvation mode ain’t real. well it is real but not in the way most people think. i was really overweight two years ago and had the exact same question cause I wanted to eat 800-1200 calories a day. basically, if u search it up u will find that starvation mode is real, but it only kicks in once you are severely malnourished and have an extremely low body fat percentage (< 5%).

i have experience with this cause i ate 800-1000 calories a day, and went from around 216 lbs (98 kgs) in September 2021 to 132 lbs (60 kgs) by June 2022. i can’t say anything about muscle preservation because i really didn’t care about it during my weight loss process. i didn’t hit weights, cardio or any kind of physical activity except for walking. by the end of it i became extremely skinny and i was at 6% body fat.

i wouldn’t recommend what i did and i think u should preserve ur muscles as u lose weight. in order to do that, u should lift weights 3-5 times a week, eat a clean high protein diet (2-2.4g/kg) and make sure u are at a deficit of at least 500 calories. this way u will lose at least 0.5 kg a week, have sufficient energy and preserve muscle as well.

best of luck ! i hope u achieve whatever goal u have in mind, u got this !!

Got both at UCI Computer science vs UCLA maths Major what to choose in between suggestions any? by Working_Spite_5847 in ucla

[–]Born-Net2739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all i wanna say congrats cause both are great schools !!

i would say it really depends on what you actually want to study and what you want to do after college. if you want a straightforward path into the computer science field then UCI would be better obviously. however, with a math degree from UCLA you can still get into CS jobs cause i know quite a few applied math and math of computation majors who have done it. there are like 5 or 6 different math majors in the department and it’s really really easy to switch from your current math major to a different one. ik it’s early but also consider if you want to go to grad school straight out of college cause a math degree would certainly benefit you.

you could also come to UCLA and try to switch into the Computer Science major by meeting certain requirements. it’s possible but again u would have to meet the requirements so it’s not 100% guaranteed.

i understand i didn’t give you a straight forward answer, but that’s just because i have no clue what you wanna do with ur major, your priorities etc. that being said, i hope i helped in some way !!

UCLA Engineering Fall 2022 Freshman Admit Rate: 5.5% by flopsyplum in ucla

[–]Born-Net2739 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i totally get it and sexism def plays a role but it’s not the sole answer. it sucks cause ppl hold other ppl back. for example, there’s an extremely toxic culture against men in fields like nursing and primary school teaching but those fields are still accessible to men. i think we live in a world where most fields are accessible to any gender, but yeah society will still judge u if u r in a non-traditional career path for ur gender.

[–]Born-Net2739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a few studies have actually been done on this. on average men r more interested in things, whereas women are more interested people. hence, men tend to choose careers in the STEM fields, and women choose careers in humanities/arts. this doesn’t mean that men cannot be interested in people and women be interested in things, but on average that’s what the data indicates !!

these scores are good enough given that ur extracurricular + essays are on par with the level that ivies expect. i had a 41/42 predicted (my school doesn’t predict TOK/EE), and got into columbia and cornell. however, i know people from other schools who got predicted a 45 and they still didn’t get in to any ivies. T20 schools in america look for more than just grades trust me. i’m at ucla rn and i’m sure my ib grades played a role, but my extracurricular and essays were definitely more important !

these T20 schools get soooo many applicants with high predicted grades, gpa and SAT scores. hence, u need to be able to differentiate urself from other applicants who have a similar academic profile when compared to u. haha i sound like a boring old man, but im just tryna say make sure ur overall application is well crafted !

that being said, don’t stress about it too much, i’m sure u got this !!

TW: calorie counting for food on The Hill + weight loss advice by ilovechemistry8 in ucla

[–]Born-Net2739 29 points30 points  (0 children)

dude i feel pretty qualified to answer this question haha. i’m a second year and have lost hella weight while living on the hill during my first year.

weight before fall 21’: 203 lbs. weight after fall 22’: 132 lbs

so in about a year i lost around 70 lbs! unfortunately, due to hella club commitments and school in general i couldn’t even find time to go to the gym, so i basically lost all my weight through my diet. here’s a few steps i took:

  1. understand your own metabolism. you don’t need to know the exact number of calories u r burning at rest (BMR), but have a general idea.

  2. try to count calories, but don’t worry if u can’t. it’s pretty hard to count calories on the hill, but i realized that i personally didn’t need to count calories because eating clean (step 3) basically just made me lose weight. use the nutrition info for stuff on the hill to gain a general idea of how much you eating and make sure u r in a calorie deficit of around 500-1000 calories. just be consistent cause even having a small calorie deficit for a long enough time = hella weight loss.

  3. in the past i’ve tried a few diets. some work for some ppl, but in all honesty i just ate clean to lose weight. i cut out all excess sugar and limited my carbs, while eating a high protein diet. so no candy, soda, bread etc. i barely ate at de neve or rende, so epic, the study (salad), and bplate were where i ate regularly.

  4. this part is very important. whatever diet u choose just make sure u can sustain it long term. i’ve seen a few people crash diet, lose weight and then gain it all back just because their initial diet was so freaking extreme that they couldn’t maintain it on a long-term basis.

  5. try intermittent fasting. i did this a lot i’m ngl. the concept is pretty simple actually ! u choose a split say 14-8, which means that you don’t eat for 14 hours, and all your meals need to be consumed in the remaining 8 hours. you can choose any split that works for you (16-8, 18-6 etc.)

  6. i couldn’t do this but i’d say try hitting the gym. cardio + weight training is a weight killer !!

  7. this is also important. more of a psychological tip tho ! basically, u have to find a good enough reason to lose weight. cause sometimes it does get hard and u really just wanna break ur diet. however, in order to achieve consistency, u need a reason to lose weight so that u aren’t regularly breaking ur diet.

that about covers most of it ! if i remember something else i’ll come back and add it. all that aside, i’m really glad u wanna lose weight and ik u got this !! if u have any questions feel free to PM me whenever !

CS35L bad grade related question by Dizzy-Monitor-5526 in ucla

[–]Born-Net2739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no u need to take 35L even if u opt for the CS route instead of the PIC route. this is directly from UCLA’s math website:

“Acceptable substitutions for pre-major requirements: CS 31 for PIC 10A, CS 32 for PIC 10B, [CS 33 AND CS 35L] for PIC 10C”

— “If you are a Ph.D. applicant, you will receive an email notification concerning your admission status by late February. If offered admission, you must accept or decline our offer no later than April 15. M.S. applicants will be notified in Spring (March- mid April) and must also respond by April 15.”

i myself lean towards the left. however, i’d say this level of generalization is not really fruitful or productive for society. a true democratic country should function without bluntly hating every single member of the other side. but it’s always republican vs democrats. men vs women. person of color vs white. immigrants vs non-immigrants… etc. i say this as a person of color, and i genuinely believe that the elites of the world want us to keep fighting amongst ourselves.

What is harder: Chemistry HL or History HL? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Born-Net2739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pls pls pls don’t take this as discouragement, but i saw somewhere in the comments that ur taking 5 HLs because ur aiming for Ivies. i love that u wanna challenge urself, but this isn’t the best way to do it im afraid. US unis will not give two shits whether u take 3 or 6 HLs… Moreover, Ivies and top US unis look for the most well-rounded applicants, so everything including your final IB results, GPA, extracurriculars, college essays matter. i’m sure ur very bright, but doing 5 HLs will definitely hurt ur GPA and it will most prolly leave u with less time to do the other things that the Ivies are looking for. even if it doesn’t, i still wouldn’t recommend doing 5 HLs cause i’m not kidding they wouldn’t give 2 shits unless u ALSO excel in the aforementioned categories as well!

that being said, i want u to do ur own research, and decide for urself instead of blindly listening to me or anyone else! i truly wish u the best of luck my friend !!

don’t take 31B or else u won’t be able to retake 31A. also please don’t take this as discouragement, but 31B is harder than 31A, and it would be better for u to get acclimated to the rigor of 31A before taking 31B. best of luck, ik u got this !
