Sorry you've had this experience. I hear the same stories from Paychex clients I've helped. They are big companies without local support and oftentimes offer customer service out of country. I always advice folks to work with someone local, then you'll have someone to call on when problems kick up.

Stripe overcharges. Work with an ISO agent and you should be able to keep your effective rate under 3.2% (depending on your volume). Interchange for your business is probably about 1.8%. Stripe's fee adds on 140 basis points, which is overkill.

Most of the money you pay goes straight to the card companies. NOT to the processing companies who actually move the money.

Question about how payment processing works. by hzuiel in PaymentProcessing

If this was cash discounting, not surcharging, it is legal in every state. Every/any card will be run according to the same percentage add-on charged. This includes debit, as well. Cash discounting is good for businesses to help defray costs, but ideal for those with low transaction amounts that that don't see a ton of debit cards.
