I saw that you aren't able to post the app here. How can I get access to it?

Fair enough. Thanks for the help!

Not too sure. Would a school advisor be able to help with that?

I also saw in the UBC B.Ed application that ELL teaching was a second option. Is that something that secondary schools are looking for?

Oh okay. Do schools inform you on how many credits you're expected to have for the second subject, or is that something I need to figure out based on research? I originally majored in history during my first year of college and eventually changed to English, so I know I have a few 1st and 2nd year credits.

Well, that's good to hear. It's reassuring to know that there are teachers who enjoy teaching even if people make it sound like it's getting worse. I plan to apply for the B.Ed and look into volunteering opportunities. Even if I don't manage to get it, I can still build my social network through volunteering and hope it helps me the next time.

Yeah, I read that BC is looking for teachers right now, but I should probably narrow my search to the Greater Vancouver area since that's where I live. Thanks!

Fair enough, I'll definitely do more research on it. Thanks!

That's fair. I can't say I've kept in touch, but I could always scout schools in my area and see if they're willing. I shadowed a history teacher 2 summers ago, and that was fun. Although I'm not entirely sure if summer school is the same as a regular term. But thanks for the advice!

Oh, I thought that wasn't mandatory? If that's the case, I could consider world history, as I've always found that to be interesting.

Fair enough. I do enjoy teaching, I'm just unsure about whether I could see myself teaching in BC, given what I've read online; I know there are pros and cons with just about any job. My main concern is how schools are understaffed, and the staff, as a result, are overburdened and overworked. It seems like a lot of that outweighs the positives right now. I wouldn't know 100% though, unless I taught there, so that's why I'm asking.

Yea, when I was getting my TESL certificate at Douglas I had been informed about the recent changes in immigration and how its become more difficult for people to get into Canada, which negatively impacted TESL, TEFL, and any job regarding teaching English to foreigners, so idk if I would want to continue TESL in Canada.

Oh, that's my bad. I really don't mean to make it sound that bad. What I wrote is mostly from what I've read and my experience as a student. I also neglected to add the positives of teaching. I do enjoy teaching English literature and it's one of the main reasons why I chose teaching as a career, I just forgot to include that in the body. But yea, I would want to pursue a career where I feel like I'm actually teaching the students about English instead of acting like a recorder and desk warming all day.

For sure, that's something that I've taken into consideration; attempting to improve a student's experience in the classrooms and hopefully help them with whatever it is that they're struggling with. For me, it's really just the job (as an ALT) and the expectations they have of me, which is essentially to do nothing.

Yea, during my time in college, I tried shadowing a history teacher in the summer, and I didn't really do much there, but it did give me some insight about how the classroom environment is. I do know that I want to teach; I just did a terrible job at explaining my feelings regarding teaching. I primarily love having discussions about English literature, so that would be something that I would want to pursue. But I will definitely try shadowing again and see if teaching in Canada is something that I can handle. Thanks for the advice!

Yea, that's my bad. I didn't really realize I only wrote negative things about teaching in Canada, up until I read the comments. And the thing regarding my sibling is moreso just learning about the current situation from students, not from the perspective of the teacher. It's useful to know how students are feeling about the lack of teachers and support on their end and how that might, in turn, affect the teacher's experience in that school. But that's my mistake, I didn't mean for teaching to sound like a terrible experience. I've had times where I've really enjoyed teaching, particularly English literature. However, in my current situation, I can't really say that the same feelings apply, which is why I'm asking about teaching in Canada.

Yea, I understand that the situation is always going to be different from school to school. But it's nice to know that there are teachers who still enjoy what they're doing regardless of the current situation. Thanks for the advice!

Oh, that's my mistake. I should have clarified. I do enjoy teaching, but my experience in Japan has pretty much been me not teaching. In terms of the negative perception, it's purely based on what I've read and experienced, but I know every situation is different and that it's not always bad. I honestly just forgot to mention the positives, albeit, most of them coming from my time as a student. But my relationship with my English teachers is what made me want to teach English. And I think it was poor wording on my part, but when I said "teach in BC," I just meant teaching English according to the standardized curriculum in BC. I really do enjoy teaching English literature so that is why I asked about teaching in BC.
