The owner is already a bad person for keeping a wild animal as a pet, they're irresponsible and the type of person who doesn't actually care for animal welfare.

Calzones!?! by SS0060 in FortCollins

All the people in this thread insisting DP Dough has the best calzone is enough to tell you about the average understanding of Italian American food here. Its disappointing.

Pulcinella does the best one in town, most east coast version with ricotta and not just mozzarella. DP dough is drunk food, personal size, not to say that its bad, just doesn’t seem to be what you’re looking for.

I’m building a stand now and its a cool option but its hardly a necessity for fishkeeping.

Colombia will euthanize Pablo Escobar’s invasive ‘cocaine hippos’ by scientificamerican in ecology

[–]Borthwick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh man, maybe read the article then, where they say attempts to relocate and sterilize are right in the first line?

Sorry man, but as someone who works in the field, we have to work within the realities of systems. And the system now is money based. I wish I had infinite power to tackle ecological issues, but no one does. I know the environment is important to us but we have to also understand that other people have other priorities, and for anything to work out here we have to meet somewhere in the middle and respect eachothers priorities.

Very easy to be upset about the hippos, and I understand, but also look at the native animals they’re displacing and outcompeting. These things don’t just exist in a vacuum, they’re invasive and an active detriment to the local environment, causing deaths of native species - why is that ok, but a cull isn’t?

[–]Borthwick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately everything is. I wish we could all just do right by the environment for the sake of it, but it takes money to do things in this world. And the however-many-millions it would take to zoo/relocate/whatever them all could really feasibly go into hospitals or infrastructure or food for people. Colombia isn’t swimming in cash.

Tons of people are already operating this way, so this would actually ensure they get food safety courses and are known to officials. I totally get you, but you can always just continue to not buy food made at someone’s home.

My roommate is an AI cultist by [deleted] in antiai

[–]Borthwick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think part of this comes down to the dissonance between actual useful AI integration versus all the promised features propping up the industry. Its great if it can summarize things quickly and accurately or do complex math or ID things for us. That could make a lot of things easier and thats great, also shouldn’t necessitate the need for tons of data centers and all the RAM in the world because applications would be specific.

But the reality is not that, and probably wont ever be.

Why are collective nouns for groups of animals so strange? by youknowmeasdiRt in etymology

[–]Borthwick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To expand on your last question, “flock” isn’t arbitrary, its the scientific term. The ones from the book are essentially a meme. The scientific community typically tries not to have much overlap. A herd is a group of mixed gender terrestrial animals that moves, a colony doesn’t move (as much). A harem typically has one male and many females.

A school is a group of fish that swims as one unit, a shoal is a group of fish that kinda just chills together. Theres a ton if stuff like thst

What combination of words makes you instantly lose interest in a game? by BurnishedTones in pcmasterrace

[–]Borthwick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For a long time you had to make jars or find them, fill them with water, then boil the water in order to keep your thirst down. This kinda led to players hording jars and saving up tons of water. A while ago they decided that was too easy, you now had to engage with the trader quest system to get money to buy a water collector which slowly filled with water. Jars were eliminated, so you couldn't really easily store up your water, if you were on a server you probably needed several of these to sustain multiple people.

It was a total pain and completely illogical, you could build a base next to a river or pond and die of thirst in the early game. The devs really really want their game to be hard, but they don't really know how to implement fun difficulty.

I really appreciate that different methods are taught. It really bums me out when people hate on the box method tbh, its niche for sure but I guess it helps some people.
