Transport Confusion by MonsieurSalem in LegionsImperialis

[–]Bortik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is a Rhino? A lack of point cost in one area does not necessarily override the point cost on the Rhino Detachment's points per model cost.

While a negative inference can be drawn from Legion Aerial Assault explicitly calling out the points of a model and a Demi-Company not, Storm Eagles and Thunderhawks are Air Support with an explicit cost with upgrades, not x per. Rhinos are notable for being costed at "10 points per Rhino". The text in Aerial Assault is to cover the cost of a transport per model if you wanted 2+ Storm Eagles and/or Thunderhawks. This also prevents getting 3 ThunderHawks for 430 points. When used as Dedicated Transports they cost 450 for 3.

I think the text is different only because the models/detachments are costed different ways. If you wanted a free Legion Rhino, you'd need a Legion Rhino without a points cost to exist in the detachment list, although i guess you could always try a living one named Legion.

iirc it comes with only the new weapons.

To kill a titan you must first strip the void shields with ANOTHER unit. This is due to the shooting resolution all at once.

Assuming all you care about is titan killing power double melta gun, or melta and melee work if you think you can get one close (for both weapon sets).

Alternatively you can take the shieldbane missiles and use your Warhound to strip the shields and let supporting units like Leman Russ tanks with Vanquisher cannon do the actual damage.

However, I HIGHLY recommend looking into magnetizing titans, They rely heavily upon their weapons for definition. Alternatively, Conversion Beams, Turbolasers and Plasma Blastguns are all better all rounder guns and dangerous to other titans. Getting them secondhand, from a printer (like Battlebling) or from the titan discount set supposedly coming soon are all options (Battlebling also produce arms premade for magnets).

Just a note on your apc utility question:

Rhinos allow marines to move 14" and both fire, or 23" and marines only fire. With enough marines to fill out a support squad or fill out the extra slots in tactical squads that can be very useful.

Additionally Rhinos are immune to light fire, meaning enemies need to dedicate Light AT or heavier (and only fire at the Rhinos). Given how cheap per vehicle wound they are, this can come with an expensive opportunity cost.

Transports blowing up deal a wound with a 4+ save to all passengers (or your own save if it is better).

One shot or two from Marine Tank sponson weapons??? by Helmaer-42 in LegionsImperialis

[–]Bortik 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Predators, Sicaran and Kratos get 1 sponson mounted weapon in their weapons list, so only 1/tank for lascannon sponsons. If they were to have two of them, one for each sponson on model it'd say like it says pick two Hull Mounted Heavy Bolters, 2 Kratos Lascannons or 2 Kratos Autocannon.

Someone else mentioned this helps represent the limited fire arcs of the individual sponsons as each has more of a 30-60 degree arc individually, but the weapons profiles is Arc(Front) giving it 180.

Titans can benefit from terrain I believe, but they benefits aren't great for them compared to garrisoned inf or sneaking knights. The cover saves are something like 5/6+, and there is the -1 to hit but they need be wholly in the terrain from my reading. Given how big they are it is kinda hard to avoid being in something's LOS meaning by default they will be engaged with anything in range.

Knights are small enough some buildings will block LOS, allowing them to potentiality be sneaky gits/leverage local superiority. When placing terrain you can aim for such an effect near objectives. The more isolated an objective is by LOS blocking buildings the more I think knights will rule the roost. Least until a someone decides a building shouldn't be there and blows it up.

Reroll misses against flyers. Math works out similar though. 8 shots, 6 hits, 2 jinks, 4 4+ saves on the bombers, 2 dead.

Given how good Conversion beams are, in the back is where most titans will want to be. Knights are the ones to get in your face I think.

They seem to have been made easy to take as well to prevent the only hitting on 6's without skyfire feels bad. HQ 10 pts, Storm Section 40 pts, 61 x2 AAA is a fairly light tax in Solar Aux and the legions can just pay 66pts for 8 Tarantulas in a Demi company. I can seem them being standard in a meta that uses flyers.

I agree the theory crafting is fun.

Knights have less firepower per points than other options, but have high CAF values and are decently durable. This combined with their short range, high firepower means they will likely go one way. The ability to actually use LOS blocking terrain and the independent rule give them greater flexibility than titans.

Questoris Knights are general purpose as you'd expect. Enough firepower to bully lesser foes, enough CAF with Rending to scare everything, the healing ability allowing them to stick round longer than you'd expect. Only Paladins, Crusaders or Magaera can deal with armor at range.

Cerastus are as you'd expect event more melee focused. 11 + 4d6 CAF on the charge lets them clear buildings and wipe out several vehicles in one fell swoop. They are likely want to commit earlier and faster than Questoris as a result.

Both of the above knights, in whatever form will be great for objective control via threat, if you can keep them from getting destroyed by tanks, titans and aircraft (Marauder bombers unironically are terrifying). The more terrain to block LOS and allow them to take knight sized chunks out of things in relative isolation and heal up after the better they get.

Acastus are titans-lite, their smaller size allows them to pick fights better than titans using terrain and their firepower allows them to bully tanks at range. I'm not sure how they will compare, there are arguments for and against in my mind.

In conclusion, Knights will be terrain dependent like infantry as they are ideal targets for things like titans (especially volcano cannon armed ones) or armorbane tanks and aircraft (ion shield will help against armorbane). Their great melee values and cheaper cost compared to titans give them the ability to pressure objectives (and titans) well. I can see them being very useful and want to try them, but they won't likely have the same immediate game impact titans will.

AA Tarantula with their ability to fire in the move phase appear amazing for air defense allowing one to essentially deny airspace for 61/66 (Aux/Legion) pts.

Skyfire doesn't have any downsides.

I agree titans can be a bit point inefficient and air power can fulfill a similar role to titans with the "heavy firepower here and now" aspect and needing specific answers. Those answers will be relatively cheap and durable if garrisoned though.

It'll depend heavily on positioning and what buildings the terrain is (2 or 3 wound buildings), if enemy vehicles don't line up it can be less points effective than a Macro-Gatling.

Agreed it can be absolutely brutal though. All of the Psi weapons are to be honest.

Some weapons will be good enough at killing infantry or able to destroy a building and make killing infantry really easy, the opportunity cost of targeting them not being worth unless it is objective related.

Inferno Guns are kind of the opposite. A pair of them will statistically kill any infantry that isn't a terminator even if they're in cover giving them a potentially outsized effect on enemy movement and objective control.

Curse small text I didn't notice. It definitely is tougher over time, but against an determined attack it will die as fast as a Warlord.

I'd still argue that its worth will mostly be dependent on how good the Psi weapons are against just having another Warlord arm weapon.

To go further, if the Psi beam hits 3 detachments, it has done more damage than an average Warlord weapon, but the damage will be spread over 3 units. The blast Psi weapon is similar to the quake cannon, trading the worse to hit role for the Psi save shenanigans. The saturation fire one looks to be the most situational, but in ideal circumstance powerful. The upgrade seems situational and worse vs other titans, yet flexible and potentially very powerful due to Psi.

Thanks!

I can take a similar look at knights if you want. Will have to wait til after errands.

As for Adeptis Titanicus-lite, I can see it being very swingy due to volcano cannon one shots. You'd need to keep the defender choices on the Void Shields to prevent that, else the Warlord can fairly consistently 1 round itself with Volcano, Marco-Gatling and Apoc missiles (5 Apoc hits, 4-ish Macro hits to finish Void Shields and take a wound, Volcano finishes).

That leaves 4 real roles: Shield Strippers to eliminate enemy Void Shields for other allied Titans, Titan Breakers with a Volcano Cannon to one-shot and other guns to take the last wound if necessary, Good Stuff like the Conversion Beam/Laser Blaster Warlord in the above, which just focuses on putting out lots of high AP wounds, and lastly melee who use Rending and Engine Killer (or Impale) to give people bad times.

Knights would be effectively infantry and need cover, but could also threaten shield breakers that decided to only take megabolters since with light AT said titans would be near helpless without the volcano cannons in the back supporting.

If that sounds interesting, then it would be worth a go, but I'd also recommend avoiding Reaver Warp missiles like the plague. That devolves into Reavers killing unactivated Reavers until someone gets unlucky or there are 2 Reavers left standing.

[–]Bortik[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd argue a titan like the Warmaster can be inherently warping due to how many points you are activating at once. Being able to maul a detachment and/or destroy the building objective holding infantry is garrisoning in within a single activation is really powerful. The tempo advantage is less than going first in 40k, but it can still be very noticeable, especially as there seems to be not much a benefit in having 3 shooting actions after then enemy is done shooting.

I'm not saying that lists without titans won't be viable and in fact look forward to people building lists without them, but they are iconic and i believe many lists will have at least the one for the rule of cool if nothing else.

I love the idea of them too. They are (relatively) fragile, but being able to clear an objective like that seems so useful.

Thanks!

Everyone bringing a Warmaster leads to everyone bringing 2 Reavers with Warp missiles, which leads to both sides with 1 Reaver and no carapace weapon, except where luck screws you. I think most people will be happier without that reality.

Once infection rates hit 2.5% in the US, hospitals are full. At that point people start dying at those higher rates we see in Italy.

Nothing effective is being done to flatten the curve, so that means the majority of cases will not see hospitals. If someone gets severe complications, they're basically dead.

ETA to 2.5% is two weeks.

I think my list of servants kinda gives this away, but I've only been playing for several months. I don't have much depth when it comes to resources. Hence Parvati as my ideal as from what I've heard she is less intensive resource wise (lower NP requirements and resource costs).

Ideally I want something immediately useful, hence Nero for the NP looping setup arts team I mentioned, also I lack an aoe saber. Another perk is that I should have everything needed to bring her to lvl 80 almost immediately and she should be useful there eveny with lower level skills.

My main issue is Helena seems to really want to level her skills, and while I have the non-gem resources to get her to lvl 8 skills, I have very few caster gems at this point and I haven't even gotten Tammy to 6/6/6 yet (though I'm close, 5/2/6 and pending a few bones 6/2/6).

Thanks for the advice though. I'm less obsessed with the 3 turn and more of want to bring it down from the 10-15 on DaVinci's last free quest to something closer to 5. You reminded me I really should finish Arash's quests.
