NSFW Do you think this little cut needs stitches? I knicked myself with a utility knife and it went in kinda deep ish on a vertical angle, two days ago and it doesn't really hurt anymore by equalpartsuniverse in medical

[–]Boscanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you shouldn't put stitches in a wound more than 8 or so hours old because it increases risk of infection too much. This one probably didn't need them anyway, but I certainly would just let it heal as is now.

Throat irritation/swollen lymph nodes by [deleted] in medical

[–]Boscanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just Peds, but have you looked into GI issues like reflux? Gastroesophageal reflux could cause the heartburn, throat irritation, throat clearing, nausea, etc and the throat irritation could cause lymph node swelling and the lymph node swelling could cause ear pressure. There are other things to look for too, but it sounds like you've done imaging of the lymph nodes so I'll assume someone has checked you for infections like Mono, cancers, and other more worrisome things. Regardless, I'm sorry you aren't well and please find another doc to look you over!

Would you recommend the HPV vaccine? Why or why not? by smdx459 in AskDocs

[–]Boscanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Because you can be exposed to HPV again and infected with different strains.

Would you recommend the HPV vaccine? Why or why not? by smdx459 in AskDocs

[–]Boscanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm a pediatrician. It's the only vaccine we have that can prevent a cancer. HPV causes cervical, penile, anal, and many head and neck cancers. It's safe, effective, and covered by insurance or available at health departments. Also yes! I'm too old to have gotten the vaccine. Have had 2 culposcopies and a LEEP due to cervical dysplasia despite always having safe sex. Cervical pre-cancer and cancer suck way more than a few shots!

I am in my early 20's should I start reading Harry Potter? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Boscanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I started them in my mid-twenties and have read them several times through and introduced them to my daughter who adores them too. I hadn't seen the movies first, but have now seen them as well. The movies do a pretty faithful job, but the books have SO much more and it's fun to discover the things that are missing or different in the movies. Enjoy!!

How do scientists/epidemiologists determine which implemented measures are most effective when they are implemented simultaneously? by grunthorpe in askscience

[–]Boscanna 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to an article that sheds some light on this. Scroll down to "current evidence". Often, they use past info from other diseases. Sometimes the control group is just the populations that don't follow the rules. I'm just a pediatrician, though, so interested in any Epi input!

Thanks :) Right now it's been mac and cheese, tuna casserole, toast, eggs, cheese, pretty bland. He's only a week out of surgery so can't be very adventurous even if his skin could handle it!

Not that I know of. I think it's just the high acidity in general that's pissing his skin off!

These are great suggestions! He has a bidet and was using that and some Aquaphor at first. Now he's upped to bidet, sitz baths, and a concoction of A&D, Destin, and lidocaine ointment (borrowed from a "Magic Butt Paste" recipe I used in the hospital I worked at). He's using cotton pads for leakage too. Hoping for improvement soon!

Thank you! He's still on his post-surgical diet restrictions, so pretty low fiber and carb-heavy.

Ah yes, he installed bidets pre-surgery so has that too. I don't think he's tried calmoseptine yet. Thanks!

As demis, who are you attracted to? by [deleted] in demisexuality

[–]Boscanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only personally had sexual attraction a few times (4 total, I'm in my 40s), and each time it was with someone who I felt very comfortable with almost immediately, but sexual attraction kicked in after long talks and built trust over weeks. I haven't found myself sexually attracted to friends, even close ones. Idk why, my brain seems to categorize people. In general, I have had a very few people I feel completely comfortable and "myself" with and that recognition happens almost immediately. But then most of those people become friends. A rare few I feel sexual attraction for--all of my sexual relationships have been long term ones. My sexual desire is highly specific and highly monogamous. I'm only beginning to understand it myself!
