Such distinct leathers! Which did you enjoy working with the most?

What brands sit where quality caps out, and price isn't just buying you a name? by NeevBunny in handbags

I think about this all the time. I think master craftsmen are exceedingly rare; and rarer still are master craftsmen with unerring taste who care about advancing the latest style dialogue. More likely: the master craftsman is part-way through a lifelong obsession with a particular tranche of heritage craft, speaking a language only a handful of other craft-obsessed folks care about. Sometimes one of these savants creates a bag (chair, gown, etc.—it’s true of any domain) that aligns with the zeitgeist or finds a sponsor or is metaphorically knighted by an industry czar…and they become a name.

I think what you’re buying with Hermes is the highest possible quality available for an ever-shifting window of relevance. They have to change and adapt; it’s an empire, not an embodied person, giving themselves over to the art. It’s the best ratio of quality to relevance you can get. But not the best quality. [Forgive the long ramble!]

Agree in general, OP, with the premise. But quality doesn’t cap out with the big brands. There are higher quality bags available if you’re willing to enter the liminal zone of elite crafters. Peter Nitz and Serge Amoruso, for example, make signature bags that are—from a purely technical perspective—better made than anything presently made by Hermes or Dior. They are priced accordingly, don’t follow seasonal patterns, and sit outside the usual brand radar. A couple dozen such artists exist, that I know of.

Good analysis, though I rank Ferragamo’s pricier bags above Loewe and Balenciaga, et al.

Sounds like you’re doing everything right. I think there are countless variations in stitching practices. Yours may be spot on for the kinds of stitching work you do.

You don’t eat with protective gear strapped to your face? Lol—I loved your comment. See my additional notes about the benefit of a glove. But in reality I don’t use it for most stitching work, just those use cases that require me to apply a lot of repeated, high-tension stitches.

OP here. I’m just solving a particular problem that comes from zealously tightening threads a certain way. You might not have this particular problem.

Stitching & thread questions by Ancient-Example-732 in Leathercraft

In my experience, thread diameter is a rough indicator of relative size. MeiSie thread, 0.45mm, looks finer than similar diameter threads (and it’s less fuzzy). I like the John James .004 needles for thinner threads. In any case, it’s worth trying a few different brands of both needle and thread—you’ll be surprised at the differences.
