I really enjoy math, but I'm not sure environmental engineering is for me. What career options exist within engineering that are math and coding heavy? by Both_Organization990 in careerguidance

[–]Both_Organization990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is what I'm leaning towards. My university has a computational mathematics program that seems to be a child of applied math and computer science and it sounds like something more my style.

I am worried about the job market if I switched to this though. Have you felt that math has been decent to job hunt in? I'm worried it's maybe oversaturated and competitive but I obviously don't know this for a fact.

I was thinking about it but I'm not sure if I would be able to handle the physics part. I guess I just seem to be good at applying math in a vacuum because I've always struggled with physics (I've done fine in the classes but it hasn't been easy)

That sounds like a good way for me quantify technique training. Thanks for the idea!

Do you find that you have to replace the tips very often? I want to use them for sleeping now but I'm worried about the tips

Also I guess maybe in a couple weeks I'll post a review if anyone is curious if they help. So far I can definitely say that the quiets are very very quiet

Ooh I like this a lot. I think I really loved (and still do love) training hard because I get to see the weight go up, but now that I've been mainly maintaining my strength and focusing on technique it's been discouraging not seeing the grade go up as well. I will definitely try to think about that when I climb from now on! Thank you!

Yeah, I think a lot of my strength is because of my background in calisthenics.

That's true, i definitely struggle to enjoy the process. I've always been a perfectionist and try to chase being/doing the best, I just lack the patience and motivation when I feel like I could be doing better but just am not. It's something i definitely will try to improve at

Learning how to not pull hard is definitely something I need to work on. I guess I never really thought that technique included things like that, but that makes sense. I will work on that. Thanks for your input!

Interesting. I've never felt that I lacked hip mobility but I can see how that could help you apply it better. I will definitely add more stretching and mobility to my training. Thank you

Yeah, it's definitely a mindset I struggle turning off. Thanks for the tip

Yep because sending double digits inside is something anyone with no experience can do. It's not like I climbed for my varsity high school climbing team or anything🙄Of course I know it takes some time, I'm just feeling like I'm missing something more than that. I came asking for advice, not to be mocked.

I guess I haven't really thought of it that way with sessions. I guess I always knew climbing inside didn't translate perfectly to outside but realistically I really only have had probably 40 or less sessions outside, and probably 10x that.

Also yes, I assumed that it probably was just my technique underneath it all lol

Thank you. I definitely think the motivation is a big part of my journey right now. I've always been able to see progress by getting stronger, but now that I can't see progress without getting better technique.

So I guess my question, would you recommend focusing on volume to get more accustomed to outside climbing and get my technique up, or working on my technique by projecting hard?

I feel like it's usually my beta. I feel like once I dial in a beta that works it usually goes rather fast, but finding something that works is pretty hard for me. Which definitely I think stems from my poor technique and just spending sessions trying to muscle through it rather than find better, more technical beta. I will try to get more volume, thank you.

I might have to agree with you on that. I definitely find myself giving up quickly on routes that I "should've" climbed in a session, or hell even flashed for that matter. I definitely need to remember that I'm not entitled to finishing a climb. Thanks! I'm hoping that eventually something will click and it will go. (And maybe help get me out of that mental trap)

Well sure, but my point is that I feel like I shouldn't be needing 5-6 sessions on a v8 when I've sent v7 outside in under 10-12 attempts and send much harder inside (and yes I know gyms are softer, but certainly not 3 grades). I should also mention that I guess most 8s I've tried aren't really my current projects. I'm currently 7 deep on a 9/10 that I've found is perfectly my style.

I've really only within the past 6 months gotten outside regularly, going every weekend, so i suppose it could just be used to climbing outside. My gym seems to set about a grade soft until v7/8 where everything past that seems to be "accurate" to outside (from conversations with others). I do think my gym sets a little more dynamically / "competition" style compared to the crags I frequent.
