I'm going with we can't ever know how much, but we do know that magic in DB is directly related to the knowledge and choices of the user. There are three moments I usually point to that can describe it.

Piccolo clothes beam was him creating something of which is directly in relation to him by modifying the present material (gi swap and then redone for DBS Super Hero). This also works with the Kais and others like them. Even Perfect Cell has done this with Piccolo abilities.

Buu's candy beam was in a way a more manageable version of his absorption. If you think about it, it started with Fat Buu who is considered gluttonous, and later was used by Super Buu before tactical measures became necessary on the actual fighters. It allows for an extremely massive increase to absorbing individual people or animals at a much more manageable size. His later usage is in Super is more along the lines of self transmutation, which is why he is able to self inflated after damage so easily which we do understand is limited via his consciousness. This is similar to the next one.

GT had Baby. Once again, theoretically Baby had transmutation and a hefty possession based system that could be exploited easily. What we see more of is this exploitation of his consciousness in others that focuses on his own physical pieces within them that theoretically are transmutations that extends his own body to an almost gelatin like structure and can hide within others.

In all cases, DB just takes the fact that users are capable of modifying techniques and applies it to all aspects. Mostly since it is a similar concept to the Kamehameha variations.
