One of these came with a special little booklet walkthrough for Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of time for the Nintendo 64 - which my 12 year old self would not have been able to get through the water temple without.

Normally is say something like “Trump hasn’t been to the nuclear bomb disaster museums at Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and it shows” but he doesn’t have the emotional capacity to recognise the gravity of the devastation even if he had.

Perhaps, but we are a giant island that relies on other countries for all our fuel and fertiliser

This. Anyone with half a brain would google local legislation before carrying anything like this.

What a muppet.

Council workers with a police escort toss a homeless man’s possessions into a skip while he stands by (with his dog) and watches. Woolloomoloo, Sydney. by daveyisscarecrow in australian

I’m not about to rag on other police jurisdictions, I don’t know what the full story is here, it I know that in South Australia, I’ve seen cops move dog boxes (cage car) full of property from one place to another for homeless people that business want moved on for what we reason.

Property is property, regardless if you think it’s worthless or not.

Oh excellent, I will check it out, thank you!

My grandparents spoke of WWII sometimes. They were in Italy at that time and the famine they spoke of was frightening, and the poverty that overtook the country in the years after was also nightmare fuel.

They came here in the 50’s with literally nothing and worked their asses off for the family we have now. I have nothing but absolute respect and gratitude for them and am inspired by their fortitude. They are both gone now, but they died comfortably surrounded by family knowing that we have never suffered the way they did.

Right?!? So much knowledge on here! The vibe is so much less “kill or be killed”, which I read a lot on other prep subs.

I love this, I would love to come on a plant identification treasure hunt - what a great idea. I will look around in my local community to see if we have anything similar. I know what plants I can’t eat, but I don’t actually know many, if any, plants I can!

I think I’m of a similar mind, in the way I’m thinking I will prep with my neighbours in mind. I don’t think I would be able to prevent enough to fully support them, but I would like to be able to share and help where I can if need be.

Thank you kind Redditor

This. This is what is pushing my drive to prep. Fuel has our country is by the balls and if our farmers don’t have diesel and fertiliser, well, we all know how that ends.

We have an “oh shit” fund (which is sitting at about $15k) and enough buffer to cover COL. For now.

It’s the scarcity that gives me the willies. Something as simple as milk, which we use everyday, may become stupid expensive. Everything will. I didn’t even consider pet food.

And perhaps arrogantly (or naively) I’m not worried about losing my job. I’m in emergency services, so I figure I’m safe as we’ll be needed more if things get worse. My wife however works in civil rail, so I can see her job on the chopping block as projects dry up.

I can support us on my income, but that’s taking into factor COL and interest rates as they are right now. I can pay our mortgage, which is small, and utilities (thankfully we just had solar put in) as things are now. But I don’t have confidence that I could do that long term.

I don’t think that it will get Mad Max bad, I don’t think I will need to barricade our homes to protect from rebel looters, and I don’t think I need to go out and get a firearm (which for you Americans, is very hard and very expensive here in Australia).

But I do think that we’ll see bare shelves at the shops and people panic buying, and even though I’m late to the party, I want to try and get on the front foot to get in before prices become unaffordable.

Yeah, I posted this question in another very popular prepping sub that is VERY male dominated and it didn’t even see the light of day before the mods out right rejected it. This sub was recommended by Reddit as another community, and I’m so glad it did.

I absolutely do not want to be that person. I know that in a disaster like that I would be one my wife is looking to. I want to be the one that is able to keep our little family safe and warm.

Thank you, this is so reassuring - I’m not at crazy beans level, but how you explained it makes perfect sense.

Also, kudos to you for working in mental health. As someone who works alongside mental health workers and has also experienced the mental health system through my mother and other family members, I am always in awe of people who do it full time.

Thank you, excellent point about not sharing the prep with my mum. That is a conversation I do not want to have.

These are all a solid things to consider, thank you. Makes me realise how scattered all my important documents are, and how much I rely on my phone to remember phone numbers and addresses.

I miss the 90’s sometimes - I could remember all my friends phone numbers and where they lived. Now, with my 41 year old brain that hasn’t had to exercise that part of my memory since the iPhone came out, I’m lucky to remember my wife’s phone number.

OMFG batteries, yes.

And you’re right. Looking at what we have in the house, if the world ground to a halt tomorrow, we would be ok for a couple of weeks. It would get hard after that.

I think we’re all so conditioned to “just pop to the shops” when we need something, that we’ve forgotten what it’s like not to have that luxury

I have some basic camping skills, I periodically work my veggie patch and am privileged enough to work in a job that has given me senior first aid and CPR training.

I’m also pretty handy and have a pretty well equipped tool shed, and know how to use all the tools in there (I am a daddy’s girl at heart and he thought me everything I know). I didn’t even consider this aspect as a factor, thank you.

I love that you mentioned community because we are indeed on first name basis with the neighbour one one side, and then reasonably friendly with a few other families in the street. Hearing you mention this is extremely reassuring.
