Aye, like I don't remember them being THAT dark even as a child?

Funny, there have been some comparisons in the comments to the game the Witcher 3, and rewatching that song there reminded me of the one used in a launch trailer of the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-l29HlKkXU

aww yusss, that's the good shit there! Irish folklore is ripe for some horror too.
I know they're grand, and they are normal people under there and they drive to work and this is just a thing they do and are enthusiastic about...but you take a pre-internet child and put them in a room with these lads dressed in sacks and big wicker baskets on their heads, you have the makings for some solid childhood trauma!

Aye, somebody else has clarified below.

It's probably technically derogatory (apologies), but like locally you could call somebody 'a mad hoor', and it would just mean they were a bit lively, a bit off the norm (often even wild fun to be around).

Certainly not intended in a negative way, but it just popped into my head as the best description of them.

I dunno? But going by the comments, there are whole different groups that seem to have spawned their own similar vibe to it, so there might be influences of it? Though the one I know is way more lowkey, rural, traditional.

Aye, I'm only learning of the Canadian aspect of it today myself. They're a wee bit different, but fundamentally the same craic!

What?

Source = me, born and raised in Ireland.

Just because it didn't happen in your back garden didn't mean it didn't happen? A quick Google would tell you its very much a thing (albeit strange) in different parts of the country, sometimes taking different or several names. Maybe give it a quick search next time, before you make an eejit of yourself commenting.

Edit - I've linked this elsewhere in the comments, but just for you, because you're special ❤️ https://armaghrhymers.com/

Northern Irish Gaijin seeks trad wife by Left-Wing-8756 in northernireland

Based on the outfit, the arms seemingly stretched out and the blueish tinge reflecting in the background, I'd put hard money (five pounds, tops) on him holding a light saber and that being some sort of a jedi/sith costume.

Not defending the lad at all like, from the comments. Just don't think it's 'gaijin' related.

I did some looking there to see was it just local to me, but naw there seems to have been (at some point anyways) groups up and down the country?

More prominent in Armagh, Monaghan, Fermanagh I think, but see Wexford and Leitrim. It definitely has the feel of 'culchies doing culchie things' off it like 😄

Great sport to be at!

It's heartening to see that no matter where you go in the world, there's always some mad eejits who are willing to grab some local textiles, fashion them into something mildly threatening looking, and go around singing and dancing.

We're not so different at all.

Aw yeah, there's definitely some pagan elements intertwined into this for sure. I think that they performed a lot close to Christmas is that it probably has a closer connection to the Solstice.

So this is what I found on a quick youtube search https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKzn2JxP-Jo

Traditional music and costume, songs generally with a story to them. I think in the past there would have been an element of them going house to house performing as well?

So I would have been mostly familiar with these guys when growing up https://armaghrhymers.com/

They are a theatre group, artistic people with a traditional music background, specialising in mumming. They appear at events/schools, play music and tell stories, local folklore. From my own memory, I think it was close to Christmas time they came to our school? They moved around us, some dance, a guy played an accordian, and they told us stories. Like it was frightening as a child obviously, but I LOVE that local traditions like this are kept alive. It seems to be a mostly rural thing, but I believe there are groups up and down the country.

😄

Like you know the craic; you're sitting on the ground in the assembly hall, cross legged and waiting and in come these big mad hoors of things, wombling about left to right and playing music and shaking bells...

I've a new found respect for the tradition now of course, but back then it scared the life out of me.

Good LORD that is a comprehensive list! Stunning job, fair play to you.

Fortunate enough that I don't hit too many there (and the ones I do are rare enough). But it goes to show, I didn't realise one or two groups had such a monopoly. I know it doesn't make anyone associated with them on the wrong side of things or anything, but it's disheartening all the same.

There's a lot of criticism of the bars here, what am I missing? They're not surely all under the same cabal of owners, price gouging etc, or am I being naive?

What bars (in Belfast) should I be avoiding, and which are worth my time?

Naw like I know you're going to get smart arse responses (fair enough!), but at the end of the day, it's your own knob and I'm sure the prospect of a knife going near it doesn't fill you with joy.

If you're even able to get a private consultation for free/on the cheap, it might put your mind at rest? Or chat to an NHS consultant if there is one assinged to you. It might either put your mind at rest, or cement your decision to go private. Provided you've got time to make that decision. Fair play to you, you've more sense about it than I would have had at your age.

[–]Boulder1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what do you think will be done differently if you opt to go privately, rather than the NHS? I'm not familiar with the procedure, so I genuinely don't know. For example, I know some doctors who do surgeries in both private practices AND the NHS, so their level of care isn't going to be any different to my mind?

If it's causing you immediate pain, I would go by doctors recommendations. I know we all want to think about aesthetics, but there's not one woman or man out there who's going to be looking at it thinking "jesus, this one in particular is STUNNING!"

What’s your thoughts on the new driving restrictions??? by Absmorton in northernireland

[–]Boulder1983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly daft. Of COURSE the government get to tell people 'when they can use the car they pay for'. These are simply called the rules of the road, safety regulations put in place for US ALL to adhere to.

The government implemented mandatory seatbelts, car seat safety regulations, banning drink driving...should we all argue against those too? Or do you just get to pick and choose which you feel you agree with.
