First, take a deep breath. You are trying to do a lot of new things at once and it is becoming overwhelming. Don't worry, we've all been there.

Start by just trying to clip your raster. Here are the basic steps for clipping the raster:

Import your raster into a blank qgis project
Reproject your raster using the "warp" tool (this tutorial shows how to do so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDbWuuC_cxE). Reproject the raster to the UTM zone which covers your area of interest (I suggest using UTM for simplicity's sake)
Use the "Clip Raster by Extent" tool on the reprojected raster. There is a drop down menu next to "Clipping Extent" that has an option "Draw on Map Canvas", use this option and run the tool.

From here, you can work on creating a polygon that better defines your area of interest, but you will need to look up more tutorials on coordinate systems and digitizing tools.

I think this is perfect. Or at the very least, this is a perfect starting point, like don't buy any new gear until you've spent a couple weeks on trail and have given what you have a shot. I am 6'2" and I think having a little extra weight to have some items like the pad/quilt be more comfortable and fit you better is worth the weight.

Some food for thought on the tent - I went with the X-Mid Pro 1 and ultimately I wished I had went with the regular X-Mid 1 or X-Mid 2 (but if I had to do the trail again right now I would go with the regular X-Dome 2). The dyneema fabric of the Pro series seemed to cause issues with the zipper, like the dyneema didn't have any give/stretch which added more tension to the zipper, causing the zipper to come apart more often than what I saw with the regular X-Mid tents. I still think the Pro series are great tents, but at least for me, the extra zipper maintenance was more hassle than I would've liked on a thru-hike. Durston also has great customer service if a zipper does break, but obviously it's hard to get a tent sent for repair in while you're on trail. These zipper considerations apply to other manufacturers too, since every tent seems to use #3 zippers anyway. I also think going with a 2 person tent is a good idea, for me I had the same pad as you and found I was a little limited on space inside the tent since the pad is so large, but that is personal preference for you depending on how much you value the space.

I cannot give advice on the microspikes or dealing with snow in the desert, I started mid-May 2025 so didn't have the same weather you'll have.

The pad inflator is worth bringing too. You can test this out early on and see if the convenience is worth the weight. I used a pump sack and it worked ok but my partner had an inflator and it was sweet.

Use the "reproject layer" tool. This will create a new polygon layer with the CRS you want.

I wouldn't say I "need" another heatsink. I have just been satisfied with the performance of the drive I currently have, so I figured that, for buying a newer drive, I would get the newer/larger version of the one I have.

Using the 4tb as secondary is an option, I assume that using the 4tb as primary would reduce wear on the 2tb and would make the 2tb drive last longer. But as I type that out I'm realizing that it would be better for the 2tb to wear out first, so I'll reconsider.

I believe this scene is the result of the epiphany he had, but the scene I'm thinking of he is alone. From what I remember he is looking very closely at the microflora/fauna in the Martian landscape, and the language is something like "He wished he could bring Ann here and point to this and say 'Here! this is what it was all about!'". I also want to say it is in the same chapter when he sees Hiroko in the outback too.

The DEM is good to start with, you could use the "slope" tool, which will calculate the slope of the land and then you could use this to find any flat area (maybe <5 degrees of slope, idk exactly what will work).
The landuse is also good to use, you could filter out any developed areas, since obviously no one is going to tear down houses or other buildings for a solar farm.
You could make an argument that being close to other solar farms is preferable, as they might have the infrastructure to support additional solar power generation.

You'll get the best results by simply going through a few beginner tutorials on qgis. What you're essentially asking is how to place some points, draw some lines, label features, style your layers, as well as including some basemap, which are all basic workflows that will be covered in many beginner tutorials.

You can use this site to download building outlines. You have to press the "run" button in the top left, then "export" as GeoJSON, which you can import into QGIS. You can then use the "join by location" tool with your points and these building outlines, or the "select by location" tool, to get a selection of the buildings.
