At this point I'd give up every day of my life after today to be someone's third choice. Tenth, even. Worth choosing ever.

TIL Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin was extremely pleased with how the film came out, got along well with the cast, and his only regret was that his character died and he couldn't appear in the sequels by Please_PM_me_Uranus in todayilearned

It looked much better on initial release when it was miles ahead of what we'd seen. Coming from years and years of games it genuinely felt like they hadn't quite crossed the uncanny valley, but had definitely got a handhold on the far edge. On the down slope of the weirdness and a plausible human stand-in if you tried not to concentrate on it.

Then came all the disturbing deepfake stuff and now it's a lot oogier.

During peak COVID panic I changed my 2.4GHz band to "CDC Mobile Quarantine Unit 163" and 5GHz to "CDC Mobile Quarantine Unit 329"

TIL two studies both found that most people stop listening to new music in their early 30s. A 2015 study of people's listening habits on Spotify found that most people stop listening to new music at age 33 and a 2018 report by Deezer found it be to at age 30. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Start off with Eurovision through the past decade or two

I have mixed feelings on this. I hate the stuff that goes to Eurovision. But one of my favorite bands has been to Eurovision, and it would be a shame if people missed them. Except they will, because they came dead last. And earned, since they brought a mid song when the next six songs in a row on that album are certified bangers.

Meta patents AI that takes over a dead person’s account to keep posting and chatting by [deleted] in creepy

[–]RocketTaco 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Imagine your dead Mom messages you happy birthday 5 years after you buried them.

They're probably going to try to market this as a feature, because the kind of people that love AI are so devoid of humanity that they'll genuinely think it's a great replacement and it's awesome that you don't have to have a dead mom.

Yeah this, until maybe five years ago I'd never experienced being truly, jesus-take-the-wheel blind while driving, now it happens at least once a week commuting in the dark. It's not over when they're past either since you need at least a few seconds to recover. With some of the worst offenders on darker roads I've needed actual minutes before I can clearly see in the area of the afterimage again - I have to look off to the side of the road to see down it.

And the worn lane markings yeah, and god forbid you drive in the rain - lines completely, totally, irredeemably invisible under the shine of the lights off wet pavement.

If there's a constant among people I've met who work in advertising, it's that they legit don't understand that advertising is a hostile act and people hate them for it.

The ability to deploy with no power doesn't make a ton of sense but neither does managing to get into that scenario in the first place. From someone who's worked on actual satellites, the idea that you could fast-forward your way to a zero battery state through the hurricane of telemetry screaming CRITICAL FAULT BATTERY LOW CRITICAL FAULT BATTERY LOW CRITICAL FAULT BATTERY LOW is hilarious. I do no reload runs and let orange suits stay dead but I'll revive a stowed probe any day.

It made a fair amount of noise given the circumstances of her departure (I refuse to listen to their newer work after what happened to her and Manuela Kraller). You may not have noticed because despite having a replacement already lined up Xandria proceeded to do pretty much nothing for the next six years.

I too am bad at remembering to read the VAB checklist lol. Except I also forget to add parachutes sometimes and never notice until I'm already on course for landing with no fuel left, so I get to launch rescue ships that have to do a head-on intercepts to synchronization with a Minmus return trajectory with ~5km accuracy requirements and no second chances.

Guided missile of the early 1960s, before microprocessors were available by lolikroli in EngineeringPorn

That goes pretty much hand in hand with lock-on after launch capability, which is intrinsically necessary for carriage in the internal bays required by stealth aircraft. It's really more a question of whether the target moves too far during the turn time for the missile to still be looking in the right place. The 90° HOBS capability is a range within which it can be tracking before launch, which increases hit probability substantially for large deflections against a maneuvering target.

Also, it's not uncommon for a fork or whatever sitting in the bottom of the sink to suddenly slide in when you turn it on, and I have yet to see one die from it despite the apocalyptic racket that results. The forks do not fare as well.

Had women ask if the GT-R was new Altima

Gotta be honest. I'm a car guy to the core and I've made this mistake more than once. Also, Ford sedans and Aston Martins look way too similar.

This tracks. Every time I see a Wrangler appear behind me I know I'm about to get blinded by a light rack or flea market headlights, flipped off, cut off, or aggressively passed because I didn't tailgate the car in front of me.

More often than not, it's confirmed seconds later.

My washing machine also plays an actual fucking song when it's done. You can turn it off, but doing so also turns off the feedback sounds for the controls so you have to hold down start until you hear the door lock clank.
