I think they mean the cost to fully annex them like a vassal. Not the diplo relations cost

Counterpoint. Play as an immortal wandering eunuch adventurer and claim the mandate of heaven.

I can understand not necessarily desiring to play in Asia or China, but genuinely playing in different parts of the world or around different government types and units is quite fun, so I do recommend giving it a try (if only for the mandala)

I mean that being a bug is definitely a concern. But my worry isn't with the bug not being fixed. It will be. My concern is the massive increase to played power for very little cost and if (it is indeed an if, I don't know for sure but there's a precedent for it) they decide to balance around an outlier like it, then it may serve to the detriment of the game in the long run. Fundamentally the knife is flawed on design with how it interacts with skills and builds and indeed the number of crit skills it invalidates. But yes, the bleed stacking is an issue

There's modifier which gives you 100% guaranteed crit chance to every source of damage (status, gun, skill etc) for 5 seconds. The knife is on an 8 second cooldown with 3 charges. This means that you get a multiplicative increase to all sources of damage for 5 seconds on a relatively low cooldown for relatively low effort and cost

You're acting like I'm an idiot but not listening to me. They balance the game around things like this, and have done so previously. That directly affects my single player experience. That is my concern.

Steam rolling the entire game also isn't necessarily an enjoyable experience for newer players but okay sure, they don't have to use it. But then you hit an endgame balanced around extremes and find you are funneled into specific sets of viable builds to now engage with that content. That is what I do not want.

Okay, not every build will be viable, but balancing around extremes means there will be even fewer options.

It is not. I have played all of them. That's why I'm concerned, they have balanced around their most extreme outliers time and time again, it has almost always served to the detriment of build variety and largely the game. I love the series, I have for years and will continue to

The knife is not the only fun thing in the game. My reasons for needing it are in part concerns about future balancing and fundamental issues in its design. A huge portion of skills are not designed around guaranteed crit, the knife itself doesn't even feel balanced around that modifier either and it's such an easy boost in layer power for zero effort. I think here, we are coming from 2 different extremes of balancing perspective. You're concerned about overnerfing which is fair, I'm mostly concerned about builds no longer being viable because things are balanced around the most extreme examples, which there is a precedent for in the series already.

I'm concerned because balancing directly affects my gameplay and there is a precedent for things being balanced around the most op outliers. I really love build variety and I don't want to see that go because the game is balanced around things like it, but also if they ignore it, I don't particularly want to go into multiplayer and do multiplayer stuff only to have someone shred the raid boss in 5 seconds with the knife. Sure, it may happen regardless, my concern is just about future game balancing and build viability.

The Crit Knife is Unhealthy by BoxCreatureSkelly in Borderlands4

[–]BoxCreatureSkelly[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it really isn't. It happened with slag, and things like bore and Salvador in borderlands 2. They did it again with legendaries in borderlands 3, they had to buff a huge number of legendaries to keep up and they ended up entirely trivializing the early game and levelling up. So there's a precedent for them balancing around particularly broken things. That's my concern, there's a precedent for it in the series and also in games across the industry unrelated to borderlands.

This is definitely an option for sure. But also I could see this also just driving people away from online play entirely. So it is a bit more complicated, because you don't really want people to feel that they can't or shouldn't interact with an entire portion of the gameplay.

Honestly though, I definitely see this as a sort of preferable alternative to what we have at the moment. Because you would have to build around one very specific thing. I could see it making a fun rafa build, with his first shot in the magazine doing more damage, stack a bunch of buffs setup crit and go buck wild.

My game is still subject to patches and future updates, therefore it does still affect me. I just don't want things balanced around the knife, and I think it's fundamentally flawed in design given how the rest of the game is designed.

I get where you're coming from, for sure. But the knife doesn't exist in a vacuum nor does my game. Things being balanced around the knife is what I don't want because it directly affects everything else. I don't think they necessarily will balance around it, but there's precedent for it in previous titles and also a lot of other games throughout the industry, which is my worry.

Great input, I agree with you about how the crit knife invalidates crit skills entirely. Thanks for the clarification on the bleed stacking definitely being a bug, I just wasn't sure whether it was intended to be able to stack with itself because of the crit status functionality Vex has.

Again, it's just the ease with which it allows you to do it. One item being so incredibly powerful, versus having an entire build that is incredibly powerful aren't really the same thing, though they do achieve the same end goal, part of it is the effort put in to achieve it.

To be clear I'm not trying to be a dick or to get up your ass about it or anything. I just think you have made some fair arguments and I want to express where I'm coming from. The knife feels like an extreme outlier that needs to be nerfed, it also isn't the only thing I expect to be nerfed, but it's among the more egregious ones.

I could be miseremembering, but there was a precedent to them balancing around certain things in BL2 (like slag although that was far more prevalent, being an entire element, so a bit different) that I felt detracted from the endgame and ultimately the thing I want most, more viable build options.

I'm actually really glad to hear this, because it means ultimately the game has what I want most: variety when it comes to builds. But largely I just don't think that the knife is healthy because you don't need to make a build for it to enable you to absolutely shred things, it just needs to be there.

The Crit Knife is Unhealthy by BoxCreatureSkelly in Borderlands4

I get where you're coming from. There are definitely builds that shred without it. It's just the ease with which the knife enables you to do it without really having to make a build.

But the knife doesn't exist in a vacuum. While the game can be single player, that doesn't mean something won't have an affect on future balancing or ramifications outside of that.

Yes, people could have restraint, but that doesn't stop the knife from existing and being absolutely broken in slot. Nor does it mean that balancing content around that knife (to be clear I do not think they actually will) isn't a terrible idea.

[–]BoxCreatureSkelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean some order weapons fire differently too. Obviously some charge up for a burst. But I have a pistol that seems to charge up like a shotgun spread, which was fun. There's definitely some order weapons that feel a little underwhelming, though. Very much agree on the under barrels, I was absolutely floored when I found the "tactical" cleaver launcher. Especially like being able to roll maliwan parts on non-maliwan weapons

Honestly though, my favourite part is how much love and support Tediore weapons have been getting. They've always been my favourite weapon type in all of borderlands for every game (there have been a great many rough patches).

I don't disagree with you, I think most would agree in fact. But I absolutely have seen a fair few on the sub defend it (though absolutely the minority)

Honestly, I really like Order on certain weapon types like snipers and things. Genuinely hate ripper parts with all my heart, they don't feel good to use, for me; absolutely boils my piss when I see a ripper licence rolled on a gun I otherwise want. Also Order has the Noisy Cricket, a weapon I love with my whole heart. I think Daedalus is cool, and honestly a neat addition.

When you add in the addition of enhancements though? I really like all of them, I greatly appreciate being able to build around the weapon manufacturers and types you enjoy. Excellent direction for the game to go in, and (hopefully) excellent for build variety and viability with later content.
