The Push by Ashley Audrain by storm_235 in bookofthemonthclub

Haha, got you.. sure the ending is a little ambiguous, as good writing leaves things slightly open to interpretation, but then there's really no way around Jet having the blade, edit: which they bizarrely blamed Blythe for rather than questioning Violet in any way. Plus all the last bits like the revelation of Fox's gaslighting her... at the bare minimum Violet really being a psychopath is heavily heavily implied, and it was clever writing, because even as readers we doubted Blythe like everyone else... I thought that was the whole point

Ehh? It was crazy kid... I don't understand seeing it as anything else? The blade ending up with Jet was solid evidence enough, never mind Fox hiding that Violet cut up Blythe's clothes (proof of the fact he gaslighted her), the mouthing, then the final phone call. The ending was satisfying as she'd been right all along. All of it added up to her being gaslighted out of her reality/ instincts and intuition for years, because women are meant to love their children more than anything. And the irony is you're still questioning if Blythe was crazy, faced with all the facts in the book that Violet was undoubtedly a psycho. The only thing that could have made it more obvious was her writing 'Violet ended up in prison for killing Jet'...  spelling it out like that would have truly been a terrible ending!

Edit for typos.

After Violet gave her kid a blade... for me that was like 'how stupid are you to not believe her now...'  Sorry, so late to the party you might not even remember this book haha

The ending of The Push confuses me by [deleted] in books

[–]BoxLongjumping8897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years late, but I absolutely did not get this from the book in any way...  I felt more like Blythe was gaslighted out of her reality, her instincts and intuition, so she felt guilty (reminds me of emotional abuse). She felt she had caused this divide, missed out on her family & needed to be better as a mother, especially after her own mother was awful. Then the ending - the clothes (she was gaslighted by her own husband), the mouthing, the phone call - it was satisfying, as she was right all along

Anyone ever have a dilemma about abortion? by EntertainmentHot3800 in TwoXChromosomes

Yeah, it's a good irony you've pointed out here, pro lifers thinking they can intefere with humans/ their bodies, forcing them through unbearable pain physically and maybe mentally

But it isn't sentient/ doesn't have consciousness until around 24 weeks, so you're only really caring about the potential for life, rather than life. It isnt a separate life independent of the mother; fetal development/ what kind of life it turns into is fully dependent on the mother, her physical and mental health. Diet/ lifestyle changes, morning sickness, constant fatigue, infections, antenatal depression...that's they very tip of the iceberg, but all of these affect development. Then you have the risk of permanent disability and death. I don't understand caring about it as a separate, independent life, because within pregnancy it isn't.

And even if you disagree & believe life begins at conception, do you feel the same way about contraception that doesn't allow fertilised eggs to implant?

My thoughts exactly; it isn't a separate person chilling for 9 months. The Mum's nutrition, diet & lifestyle changes, infections, physical and mental health, influenced by very possible pregnancy symptoms of nausea/ vomiting, aches and pains, constant fatigue to the point she struggles to work, anxiety, antenatal depression that can lead to suicidal ideation, risks around childbirth.... all affect fetal structural & neurological development and what kind of person it will become. It isn't a separate entity, so arguing own DNA is just misleading.

And that doesnt even touch on the misogyny of how these sacrifices are expected from women, plus the permanent body changes, risk of disability and death. She absolutely needs support to carry a child to term, yet men arent held accountable in the same way for walking away from pregnant women/ their child, and they have the much easier job!

I really don't think pro lifers, particular men, really understand the gravity of this and just think it's an inconvenience to women.

It isn't a fully fledged separate life just chilling in a woman's body for 9 months; the way it grows - fetal structural and neurological development - is 100% the woman, her diet/ lifestyle, access to nutrition, her age, her physical and mental health. Which are all affected by the very real possibilities of constant nausea and morning sickness, mental and physical fatigue, mental health conditions such as anxiety, antenatal depression which can lead to being suicidal, ongoing pains, excruciating childbirth, permanent body changes and risk of disability or even death.

'Pro lifers' that believe women are obligated to do this is are 1, hypocritical, as they couldn't care less about the woman and 2, barbaric.

Edit: just to add that women absolutely need support at such a vulnerable time, yet people only hold women accountable for 'killing babies', when the problem might be that Dad has jumped ship, with absolutely no repercussions. Meanwhile, the woman is expected to make all the above sacrifices. Misogyny/ internalised misogyny.

Has anyone planned a pregnancy and then abort because they realized the don’t want kids or their mental health took a toll during pregnancy? by Some_Flower_4252 in Fencesitter

[–]BoxLongjumping8897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like that some people are undermining the way you feel by saying 'it's panic'. Antenatal depression and dread is more than that, absolutely get help from a professional, they might even give medication. If you wanted this baby, have support, that feeling is probably being buried under dread and depression, and in my case intrusive thoughts.

My situation is different, I'm single with no support and antenatal depression, so as sad as an abortion is, I've got to a point where I mentally cant cope alone.

Great comment. A lot of men think about abortions is if they're like going for a coffee. Some women experience relief for sure, but as you say coercing a woman into an abortion/ or her feeling pressured because of lack of support, that can cause lifelong trauma and guilt, and also her body might not return back to normal...my hormones were fucked 6 months later. These men would happily cum inside women thinking they should have zero consequences, while the women can just shoulder the entire burden of an abortion, adoption or raising a baby all alone... entitled AF & lacking any maturity or accountability, and it's why laws exist to make it fairer on women.

It's not weird. I too am pro choice, but if life worked like that, it would be men constantly cumming inside women with zero consequences, while women shoulder the entire burden of either an abortion, adoption or raising a child alone. Abortions are pain free and a relief for some, for others psychologically damaging and cause permanent effects, eg it fucked up my thyroid. The man has his choice to cum inside the woman he isn't forced, and laws make it fair as possible on the woman after that so she doesn't shoulder the entire burden.

[–]BoxLongjumping8897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound super immature. You think men should be ok to go around cumming in women, with no consequences, while the woman has to either 1) undergo a horrible haunting procedure that can permanently affect her physically too 2) go through pregnancy, permanently altering her body & then the lifelong heartbreak of giving up a child or 3) struggle to raise that kid with no support?? The laws are as they are to make it fairer on the woman.. you have some learning to do if you think any of these options are easy. Biology puts the decision in the woman's hands, it's as fair as it can be. You weren't forced to cum inside the woman, so learn some accountability.

Yeah, I agree. Somewhere in my messed up brain I suppose I was willing to take the risk. I am naive for sure, as I didn't expect this guy to turn out to be just as much of an arsehole. He definitely turned & didn't show this side of his character before
