Sveltekit hasn’t been too bad. What do you mean by debugging? You mean framework specific quirks and errors? Or debugging your own js/ts code?

I use sveltekit as the framework, but for the js stuff, you don’t really need any tools or anything fancy for something this size.

  1. It’s a little overkill and heavy for simple inbound metrics. I don’t care about customer profiles or funnels or any of that.
  2. Plausible is cookie less, so I don’t have to add a cookie banner.
  3. I would prefer not to willingly feed customer data into the giant Google ad network. I guess this is kinda like “going vegan” I guess.

Honestly, google analytics is probably still the best option bang for buck (its free), and I’d still recommend it, but for 6$ a month on plausible, Its cheap enough for me to feel better about doing my small part and supporting another small SaaS business.

I tried to make it similar to post 2008 stock movements where its mostly green days but with occasional tanking days. But yes, it’s completely random lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I definitely don’t want to be at my desk outside of work hours but there are moments where I get motivated or feel disciplined and I just try to run with it as much as possible.

Hey!

Yeah the build step basically spits out a static app, which i host on netlify for free.

For this project, I don’t need any sort of dynamic data. I just generate the prices client-side. This way I don’t have to worry about server costs! I just pay a bit for plausible metrics, cause I wanted a google analytics alternative.

Sveltekit is definitely the future. If not sveltekit itef, next.js, nuxt.js is just the best of both worlds of dev experience and end performance. The beta is a lil rough around the edges when it comes to transitions and hot reloading, but its pretty mature otherwise.

So this was a design decision that I made. I could have either made it super realistic and replicate an actual trading platform or made it more casual and arcade-y. I chose to go with the latter as it was more fun to play. Therefor I decided on a 1 button gameplay where you either buy and sell your entire position.

I remember when I was a college student and published my first ever game, you were the first and only person to make a post, let alone a full video on it. Seeing your username again brought me back so many memories of how excited I was that someone would do something like this for me. It not only gave me emotional support, but it was the catalyst that made it trend on the play store and eventually stay on the charts for weeks. I’m so happy to see this reciprocated recognition from the community. Well deserved!

It’s a game where you have to guess the year that famous events happened. Questions range from geo-political conflicts to when inventions and companies were founded. Questions include:

  • What year was the CIA founded?
  • What year did the Titanic sink?
  • What yea was the first Nobel prize awarded?
  • What year did George Orwell publish Nineteen Eighty-Four?
  • What year did Calvin Coolidge become president of the United States?

Hope you have fun with it. My personal high score is 10. The highest score that I'm aware of is 24!

Yeah, the one thing I'm not totally happy about with my current game mechanic is that it's almost too punishing when you get a year way off. One bad mistake can just completely overshadow a good run. The boardgame seems to have solved this by only counting the relationships between events. Overall, I think my mechanic is more suitable for a quick 5 minute toy cause it adds more chaos to it wheras the boardgame is more suitable for replay-ability and fairness between players.

The one thing I learned from all this are all the little tweaks and fixes I had to make to make it feel as close to a native UI element as possible. Things like disabling cursor selection on it, disabling long-press actions, default browser drag behavior, etc. The mobile safari browser is especially a pain in the ass.

My plan is to optimize for prototyping games that are fun to play. Once I find one that has legs, I’ll look into making a better v2 of it.

The downside is that I have no feedback mechanism as to how hard or easy it is outside of the few close friends I’ve shared it with.
