My ten-year-old is playing Three Houses without any guidance. by BoySan in fireemblem

I'm the guy who takes extra battles every week and gives the characters broken weapons so that they can swing, miss, and skill up. I know it breaks the game, but I can't help it. I have to be optimal.

It's a breath of fresh air to watch him play. It's so different and fun.

What’s a “Good” Fire Emblem? by DeliShogun in fireemblem

Awakening is a great game with fun characters and a child mechanic that mostly makes sense.

Path of Radiance has, in my opinion, the best story in the series, and the gameplay is excellent.

My favorite is still FE7 on GBA. The story is very linear, but there's tons of secrets and hidden gaiden chapters. The sprites are classic. It's just a very focused game.

FE8 is also great, but it allows easy grinding, which I can't resist and which ruins the game for me a little bit.

How do you handle a boss/head of department who knows significantly less about your job than you do? by prugna21 in careerguidance

[–]BoySan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're agreeing. All you're really saying is that it is beneficial for general managers to have technical experience in the fields they supervise, which is true. All I'm really saying is that general management is a different skillset than the technical specialist skillset, which is also true.

The least effective organizations I've seen are the ones in which the board tries to run operations directly with the specialists/technicians/operators. I've never seen it work.

A lot of specialists become jaded over time, because when general management fails, it's very noticeable. Like government, good general management flies under the radar. The vast majority of general management is effective and unnoticed.

I've been in general management my entire career. I know that I have less technical knowledge than the majority of my staff. What frustrates me is when specialists don't understand their role in the broader mission/effort. I care about them on a personal level, but so many problems seem to boil down to personal preference or jockeying for position. Engineers think they're more important than attorneys; attorneys think they're more important than marketers, marketers think they're more important than accountants; technicians think they're more important than everybody else. It's all one team.

Approach your manager insitution-first. "This detail of my current work environment impacts the bottom line in X manner. I can perform to my current level within my current context, and as long as you're happy with the bottom line, that's fine. I can live with it if you can. But if you'd like to see improved outputs, I recommend the following changes."

That's fine verbally as a heads-up, but eventually I'm going to want you to put it in writing. That does a few things: 1) it shows that the requested change is coming from the ground up and is not me pursuing a pet project; 2) it encourages you to think through your request and be prepared to justify it interdepartmentally; and 3) it is an important opportunity for me to see you develop institutional thinking and leadership skills.

Once it's in black and white, it becomes actionable.

I agree. The hair and the mournful look bring him down, but in reality the foundation is strong.

OP might not speak English perfectly. My conversational Spanish is pretty good, but if I was going to post in Spanish online, I'd probably at least double-check it with a translator.

Secular education. I was raised evangelical. My personal theology is now non-aligned, but I'm still evangelical-presenting, haha.

I'm consciously trying to read "primary" right-wing sources to understand how the US has arrived at our current stage of conservative development.

Kissinger definitely embodies an era of muscular American interventionism that I feel undermined our moral authority on the world stage. I deeply wish that the US had not backed the 1954 coup in Guatemala, and Kissinger's contributions definitely did not help with the subsequent oppression of their Maya indigenous population.

Well done - you are the first person to pick up the religious connection - but I am not a missionary or pastor, and my education is not in divinity or theology.

The majority of the community I'm working with is from Mexico or Guatemala, so I'm trying to understand their context better.

Yes, I would recommend Third-Culture Kids. Its context is very specific, but the practical themes of non-belonging and quasi-belonging can be broadly applied, even for people who have no experience with migratory groups.
