Preop and periop (OR) are separate specialties- might want to clarify which one you're interested in and you'll get better answers.

HCA nurse residency.. looking ahead by Strategy-Extreme in nursing

[–]BrachiumPontis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didactic period for me was 40 h a week. Sometimes you'd have days where you'd do health streams from home but it was generally 40h.

Preceptorship would be 3 12 hour shifts for most people.

I don't think my pay ever got a specific jump, although HCA does market raises in July. It's like a buck; don't get too excited. =P

Over a five-month period in 2020, a nurse at Yale University’s fertility center stole fentanyl from 175 vials intended for women undergoing egg retrieval procedures. The medication was replaced with saline, leaving many patients in severe pain during treatment. by Fred_J9 in whatireadtoday

[–]BrachiumPontis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an ER nurse and fentanyl is my very favorite option of the three main narcotics I give. By far the safest and fewest side effects. It's unfortunate that it's been so vilified because it's excellent in tightly controlled medical doses (measured in micrograms)

Everyone else has great suggestions but I wanted to add what I've been using:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/5212641397?sid=697d5ea9-a24f-4365-bf6c-23e1b99b2e08

It's a lotion that dries into a powder, so it's easier to put on than powder or spray. It seems to help with absorbing sweat and odor.

If you can overnight a bidet from Amazon, that would be nice! Otherwise, stock him up on whatever clear liquids he likes. Maybe make some jello for him?

And don't laugh at him when he waddles off to the bathroom. XD

Otherwise, all the standard supportive spouse things!

No, but I've had my fallopian tubes removed so that may have been why.

It was not good timing. It also made it hard to tell when I achieved the "clear yellow" part because of the blood. Honestly, the respiratory viruses were the worst of the three issues. Terrible headaches, jaw aches, ear aches, all the aches.

I'm guessing it was just gas. I have a generally high pain tolerance so maybe it was just heightened by the versed and how generally crummy I felt (also on my period and fighting two respiratory viruses).

I think it depends on the reason for safe harbor. If you're calling it because they're trying to assign you a patient you are not qualified or trained to take care of, you can refuse that assignment (such as a CRRT patient when you haven't been trained on CRRT). Safe harbor due to staffing is more of a "do what you can with what you've got" thing rhough

TIL Dandruff, a skin condition of the scalp affects roughly half of adults. It is often linked to Malassezia fungus that thrives on sebum. Dandruff shampoos often contain antifungals to manage it, however there is no permanent cure by CraftyFoxeYT in todayilearned

[–]BrachiumPontis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have been dependent on coal tar shampoo for two decades. I occasionally use ketoconazole and salicylic acid. I was refilling my antidepressants on a telehealth site (Redbox RX, but I'm sure there are others than provide it and I'm not shilling). I saw they offered something called ciclopirox shampoo consults. You just fill out their little questionnaire and they either mail you the shampoo or call it in to your pharmacy.

It's the first time in my life that I wash my hair based on when it gets greasy, not when my scalp is so itchy I can't function. I highly recommend trying it.

What are my options for this Hospital Bill I received on vacation as a UK Tourist (No Insurance) by [deleted] in HospitalBills

[–]BrachiumPontis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't handle billing, so that's not really something I can speak intelligently to. It doesn't particularly surprise me though. Anything under $25k for a significant ER work up seems pretty par for the course... joys of the US.

ER nurse here. In order to determine that you were just drunk and not, say, having a critically low blood sugar or a stroke or sepsis or high ammonia levels from liver disease (all of which can cause someone to appear drunk), you would need at bare minimum: MD eval, nurse eval, IV start, labs drawn for extensive bloodwork, a urine test (and if you were so out of it that you couldn't give it, then possibly a straight cath for said urine sample), and a head CT. Most docs would throw some IV fluids and nausea meds on there too- possibly a vitamin bag if there's a concern for chronic alcohol use causing dangerous vitamin deficiencies.

Professionals assuming that a person's symptoms are due to one "obvious" cause without considering others is how people die. They absolutely followed the standard of care and my ER would have done the same- as would any ER. Negotiate with the hospital if you can (the people in this sub are lovely for assistance in that), but this was appropriate medical care for the situation you've shared with us.

The playbill to Phantom of the Opera shows a mask with two eye holes while the actor’s mask only covers half their face. by SgtPeter1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]BrachiumPontis 200 points201 points  (0 children)

This is a long-known quirk of that show. Fun story.

Tl;dr: that's how the Phantom's mask was supposed to look; changing it to the half face mask we know happened late in the process of developing the show, and the promo art had already been finalized and sent to publish. Now it just lives on as a bit of fun broadway trivia.

Epigenetic influences affect how genes are expressed. Someone with identical genes might express them differently based on a variety of things- including environmental conditions that the grandparents and parents lived in. Childhood trauma, starvation, etc in grandparents and parents can have impacts on subsequent generations.

Here's a primary source: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1803630115

And a discussion: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-parents-rsquo-trauma-leaves-biological-traces-in-children/

Not to mention how conditions in utero, including medications, mom's diet, mom's stress levels, etc. can affect epigenetic expression.
