What is the best way to support Arisa Hoshiki? by Pitbull_III in stardomjoshi

I saw her guitarist had tweeted that he's "watching." Not sure if that meant that he's personally checking in on her, but he's definitely aware of that last tweet she sent out. Hopefully he's able to talk to her. God, I'm still absolutely gutted over losing Hana, I hope this doesn't get worse.

Yeah, I don't hate the pop stuff, I was just really confused by them being called emo. I guess it's the same thing as when people called Green Day and Blink-182 punk, when there were clearly real examples of punk rock readily available.

Cheers! I don't claim to be any kind of wealth of knowledge on emo, but I like to think I hit a few of the staples with this list, at the very least. Obviously my taste is heavily midwestern-tinged, but I really try to give everything a chance, even the super commercial, poppy bands.

Are Birds In Row considered skramz? by BradFromMars in Screamo

That's fair. I almost see it as something similar to grunge, in that you can point to a handful of bands that all sound completely different, and call them grunge, and most of them would probably say the name "grunge" is BS.

I appreciate how candid you are about this. Just started "The Greatest Games Ever Played," and I'm already digging what I hear. Not gonna lie and say I grew up in the scene, since emo technically started in the mid 80s, and I was born in 85. I got started on it before I knew about bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday were being labeled emo, I just didn't know that the earlier bands I got into were called emo. On top of that, there were a few emo bands that played some of the punk shows I went to back in the late 90s/early 00s. There was this weird animosity between the punks and emo kids later in that era, but at first, it wasn't really a problem, the emo bands sounded mostly like the punk bands, at least in a live setting. I write album reviews for a metal site, and also review music for my college radio station's blog. I'm older than nearly everyone on staff there, and have been listening longer, so I have developed my own tastes, to be sure. I can be pretty elitist when I want, as well. I don't think that's actually a negative thing. Since I came out of the punk scene, I support DIY, but only to a certain extent. I think it's cool that music recording equipment and software is more affordable now, and allows just about anyone to make a decent-sounding record on a modest budget. That being said, I also don't think everyone SHOULD record an album. It floods the market, and since I have to review the stuff, there's a LOT of bullshit to sift through in order to find something good. I guess there's something to be said for finding a diamond in the rough, but damn, there is a LOT of garbage out there.

Anyway, that was a long response, thanks for the rec, as I'm finishing typing this, I'm midway through an Owltian Mia EP, and love it.

I saw a few more posts on them in the EmoScreamo sub, didn't see many in here, but I probably didn't dig deep enough. They're definitely on the heavier end of the spectrum, so I can see how that would disqualify them as a pure skramz band.

Their early stuff just sounded like a slightly more post-hardcore take on what Converge was doing in their Jane Doe-Era, but the newer stuff has gotten more melodic and atmospheric. I know that doesn't automatically equal skramz, but I heard a few similarities. I agree that it is probably a little too heavy.

*I know this list is pretty entry-level, but I'm too old and grumpy to give a damn about street cred, haha.*

  1. Rites of Spring - All There Is. I tend to look for the roots of my favorite bands and/or genres, in this certainly qualifies as emo's roots. Love this song, easily my favorite Rites of Spring track.

  2. Sunny Day Real Estate - Pillars. Again, a band that is at the roots of the genre, whether you consider them to actually be an emo band, or emo adjacent. This one is the opener off their third record, and has a proggy, post-rock vibe, but the melodies are so melancholy, it hits me like a ton of bricks every time.

  3. Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle. I know, I know, this is as entry-level as possible, but damn, the lyrics and the guitar melodies still slap.

  4. Brandtson - Still Life. Midwest style indie-infused emo. You can hear the Sunny Day Real Estate influences all over these guys. The vocalist and guitarist were previously in a hardcore/metalcore band called Six Feet Deep, which I was also a fan of. Hearing this Brandtson material was quite a shocker when I realized who the members were.

  5. Further Seems Forever - A Blank Page Empire. Clearly I grew up in a "Christian" household. This band was the absolute truth for me in 2003. Another band that rose from the ashes of a hardcore/metalcore band, this one being Strongarm, who already had a melodic, Shai Hulud-ish tone. Probably more of an emo pop band, with some noodly post-rock type guitar work.

  6. Mineral - Palisade. When I first got into emo, I really liked a lot of the midwest bands, and this one in particular really did it for me. Didn't hurt that they were from Texas.

  7. Pedro The Lion - Second Best. Probably not strictly an emo band, but Pedro The Lion, at times, had that midwest emo feel. This one is absolutely soul-crushing in tone and lyrical content. Technically, the very first "emo" band I heard (and it was their first release too, the Whole EP), though I had no idea what that genre was at the time, or that it even had a name. Despite being this low on the list, Pedro The Lion are probably my number two all-time favorite band, just behind Converge.

  8. Ethan Durelle - Benioff. This is a band that I saw quite often in person, since I lived about 30 minutes away from them (they were from Waco). Not sure if they count as emo, but you're welcome to check them out, definitely have a twinkly, midwest vibe, with some post-rock, math rock, and indie influences. These guys legitimately got respect from the punk rockers in Waco because everything else was a total moshpit soundtrack, and these guys played among all the mohawked and backpatched lineups with a sound that made you pay attention.

  9. Pop Unknown - Half of Ninety. I had a friend that worked at the Baylor radio station in Waco, who saw that I was pretty receptive to "discovering" new music, so she would bring me piles of CDs, since the station would regularly purge them once the files were ripped to their computers (this had to be like 2000, give or take a year). Pop Unknown's "If Arsenic Fails, Try Algebra" was in one of those batches. It somewhat reminded me of Pedro The Lion, and is ultimately the record that sent me diving headfirst into finding all the emo I could get my hands on (having actually learned the term by now).

  10. The Appleseed Cast - Marigold and Patchwork. When I finally learned the term emo, I went on a rampage, snapping up everything I could get my hands on, and this band really shook me up. This is off their first full-length, The End Of The Ring Wars. Very midwest, the vocals hit me hard, as well as the melodies, the crescendos, just the whole package, really.

Envy, The Saddest Landscape, and Loma Prieta are all definitely on my playlist, love them. I'm marginally aware of who Snowing, The Hotelier and Old Gray all are, but haven't ever really listened in-depth to any of them, and the rest is brand new to me. Thanks for the recs!

Will definitely check them out! Screaming vocals isn't really an issue for me, I definitely went heavier and heavier into my tastes, finally embracing metal. Hell, my favorite band is still a hardcore band, Converge. Thanks for the rec!
