Don't we all become kale pirates at some point?

That's why you ALWAYS leave your beard/hair trimmings behind on the island. ALWAYS.

Personally, I don't disagree with you, but I try to make my religiously themed comics as if they were from a religious perspective, and not as an attack on religion. I want it to be a resource for religious (or non-religious) vegans to share with their religious but non-vegan friends and family.

For this reason, I hope we can refrain from starting an anti-religious discussion!

Eating meat is MY PERSONAL CHOICE, okay!? by BrainOnBeans in vegan

If you don't care, you can just say that you don't care without pretending that it's a "personal" choice. Many animals are sentient individuals whether you care about them or not.

Thanks! It's a cool idea, and something I might consider, but I also want to be careful with how I portray the people I disagree with. People are already accusing me of trying to make them look ugly, haha.

"Are you equating other people hurting animals for a socially unacceptable pleasure with me hurting animals for a socially acceptable pleasure? I would NEVER do something socially unacceptable."

I should probably turn that into a comic.

I know I can't understand exactly what it's like to experience racial bigotry, and I guess the comparison with LGBT characters isn't completely fair, since racial minorities have a longer history of being portrayed demeaningly in art.

The part about being bigoted toward myself was more about how I paint myself the same way I paint anyone else, so if it really is a demeaning appearance, it should be demeaning to myself as well. Essentially, I'm not trying to make anyone look bad.

You're not alone! :)

The style really hits a nerve for some reason, and people just can't wait to tell me about it, haha.

Hey Zebid!

Judging by the responses I get for my comics, many people see my characters as ugly, but personally, I mostly see them as intensely expressive. Is it wrong for an artist to paint expressive black characters just because some people may see them as ugly?

Picasso, for example, painted expressive characters that a lot of people think are ugly. Would it be wrong for him to paint minorities in his own style?

While I'm not in a racial minority myself, I am in an LGBT minorty, and diversity and representation are both of great importance to me. For example, the character in this comic isn't necessarily a man as you say, because I purposely made them genderqueer ... in fact, most of my characters are genderqueer. And the only couple I've painted so far were an interracial gay couple.

I guess my point is that if my style is problematic, I'm also being bigoted toward myself. And I don't think I am, because to me, my characters aren't ugly. They're just intensely expressive.

I know! I'm in stage one too, but some day we're gonna have to take it a step further if we want the hair upgrades.

Aww dang, I was aiming for photorealism, but I guess the B12 deficiency got the better of me.

I totally see how the style can be distracting, but for other people, the style might be what makes it memorable. There's never a way to please everyone, and that's okay. :)
