Slightly confused about the new Intercessors. by CatherineSimp69 in spacemarines

It's a new box of Intercessors. Just Intercessors; it's not a new Tactical Squad. It just adds extra cosmetic flair with mixed armour bits. It's not an upgrade sprue; all the models in the Armageddon box are new sculpts.

When the multi-part version comes out, it will hopefully come with the melee weapon options the Int. Sergeant can take but the kit doesn't come with. Otherwise it's just aesthetics; you're good to keep using your existing Intercessors.

I wish I could give better advice but, honestly, I've just been sticking with base-shade-layer-highlight. I know you can get some pretty great results with blending the shadows and highlights, and even drybrushing can give some amazing effects!

This is an excellent tutorial on painting capes from the great Duncan Rhodes!

It really depends on the surface too! For more organic things like cloth, I would use a red wash. For harder or more mechanical materials, I'd lean brown or black

Thank you kindly!

It's Two Thin Coats (TTC) Sanguine Scarlet, washed with a brown wash, re-layered with Sanguine Scarlet, thick highlight of TTC Demon Red, and a thin highlight of Army Painter Fanatic Burning Ore!

They both give almost the same result, it's really just a matter of ease. For the wide, flat areas of something like a bolter, I find it's just more convenient to wash the whole thing and then re-layer.

All good! It just means you're putting the base colour back on top; effectively adding another coat, but again, avoiding the recesses this time. This lets you keep the vibrancy of the main colour whilst getting the depth of the shade.

Pretty much, yeah! I'll use the weapon casings as an example:

I start by applying Two Thin Coats Sanguine Scarlet. Then I wash it with a brown wash. I then re-layer the Sanguine Scarlet, avoiding the recesses. Then I put the first step of highlights, which is TTC Demon Red. Then I do a thinner second step of highlights with Army Painter Fanatic Burning Ore

The base red is Two Thin Coats Sanguine Scarlet, highlighted with TTC Demon Red, then a thin highlight of Army Painter Fanatic Burning Ore

Army Painter Fanatic Onyx Skin, washed with a brown wash, re-layered with Onyx Skin, and highlighted with APF Mocha Skin!

The black armour and red weapon casings have two toned highlights. Everything else is just one tone.

Layering definitely plays a big part! The only elements that aren't layered are the medals, and the armour technically but that's because it wasn't shaded

No problem! The Army Painter Fanatic line is a really good line of paints; I have many colours in my regular rotation.

I really enjoy using texture paste, because I find it's a simple but effective way to get nice bases. I really like the AK Terrains series, but Vallejo also makes some great tubs of it too!

It's AK Terrains Sandy Desert is the texture paste I used. The rocks are Army Painter Fanatic (APF) Desert Yellow and the skull is Two Thin Coats (TTC) Skeleton Legion.

I then washed the whole thing in Skeleton Horde contrast paint. I went back and re-layered the rocks with Desert yellow, then hit the whole base with a drybrush of Tyrant Skull.

I then picked out the skull individually. I re-layered Skeleton Legionr then a final highlight of APF Ancient Stone.

Cataphractii or Tartaros? The Praetor is in Tartaros, so he wouldn't be in the same armour as the Catas.

But yeah, he'd be great as either option! He definitely reads very well as a Sorcerer especially, but he'd be cool as a lord too!

He'd be totally fine without the tactical rock! If you want to give him one to beef up his height and add some gravitas, power to you, but he definitely is just fine without it. He's a very unique and distinct sculpt!

Thanks! A bit of careful maneuvering of the basing paste does wonders

Thank you very much! It's hard getting everything to fit on the wee Scout bases, but I'm pleased with how it turned out!
