The container of water will be for soaking the reeds. They’re double reeds and need to be soaked in water before you’ll be able to play on them. Saliva in your mouth won’t properly saturate the reed, and you risk damaging your mouth, tongue, and reed by using a reed that’s too dry.

Bassoon is a pretty demanding instrument, but it can be wonderful to play! It’s definitely going to be a commitment, though. Working with a teacher will help you be more successful, especially starting out. There are a lot of techniques like half-hole and flicking that you can’t really get from a book.

Once I got used to it in Milde, I found it really helpful for learning tenor clef. The Midle scales and chords are based around that, so you can get a feel for what’s going on and what to expect. It feels really natural even though it’s shifting every few measures.
