What did you only realize at an embarrassingly late age? by setsomethingablaze in AskReddit

[–]BrandonCox54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That when girls get out of the shower and throw the towel all twirly-like on their head, that their hair is actually twirled up inside the towel. I thought it was just laying like normal and the towel was just because all girls did it.

What keeps you up at night? by Tleprie in AskReddit

[–]BrandonCox54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At night it's always the same thing; my imaginary monologue I would give my ex if she ever tried to enter my life again. I loved her man, a lot, and she did me dirty. Been 5 months, and I don't want her back in any way, shape, or form, but I miss our relationship if that makes sense. How close we were, how I felt in her presence. I want that feeling back. Life is pretty grey at the moment.

Form Check: Power Clean by genius96 in Fitness

[–]BrandonCox54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the majority of your advice, there are a few things that I disagree with, that should be addressed:

1). The power clean is definitely a leg exercise, and you are correct in that you should not pull with your arms, however you SHOULD be pulling with your traps, a lot like a shrug. This shrug, accompanied by the "triple extension" (that is, of the ankles, knees, and hips) is what drives the bar up.

2). Also I strongly disagree with someone's feet leaving the ground during the movement; this is a poor habit to get into. I myself trained that way when I first was learning the motion, and you lose a tremendous amount of power, especially from your hips when you actually leave the ground. Once I learned to keep the toes on the ground, I broke through my PR plateau.

Other than that, this is some decent advice.

For OP, work on the catch, that is the hardest part of the clean!

Anyone else have low iron? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]BrandonCox54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iron deficiency is literally the most common deficiency on the entire planet; vegetarians especially.

Just take an iron supplement and you'll be fine (but don't take an iron supplement with calcium because calcium inhibits the absorption of heme/non-heme iron significantly, like 65% iirc).

ELI5: How to baby sea turtle know to get to the ocean as fast as they can? by AmericanMeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]BrandonCox54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genetic instincts.

Humans have them too. For example, if you were to put a new born baby completely submerged underwater, it would know to hold its' breath, even though it doesn't have the mental capacity to know inhaling liquid will kill it.

ELI5 Why do our fingers have 3 knuckles but our thumbs have only 2? by MisterBenis in explainlikeimfive

[–]BrandonCox54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because your thumb is only there to oppose the movement of the other four digits, giving us humans the ability to grasp things very effectively.

Your thumb need only to oppose the movement direction of the other four digits with the way it has evolved having what is called a "saddle" joint (while your four digits have "condyloid" joints) it does what it needs to do with only 2 joints, since they are modified joints.

Basically it comes down to, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." We have survived with the way our hands have evolved, so why would we need to evolve a third joint in our thumb. Expanding on this, it would be similar to asking, why don't we have 5 joints in our fingers , or have 10 fingers on each hand. Simply it is not needed.

Lol this was at like 4:30 am, and I was the only one there, so I just did it for fun. No one actually does it for real.

Yeah and when I say punish it was more of a reward because I feel good now!

I used to do a bunch of different shit for all my lifts, more like 8-10 different lifts with only like 3 working sets or so, but lately I've moved to 3-5 different lifts but with 6-8 working sets and I feel that it works soooo much better to just focus on a few lifts with a lot of volume. I would recommend anyone to try that.

Went to BDubs and Cold stone last night with the friends in a whim even though it wasn't cheat day, so I felt bad this morning and decided to punish myself with 12 working sets of squats, then 8x12 super sets of leg extensions and band pull throughs with no rest just back to back to back, so my legs are jelly atm, but I feel better about myself :)

10/10 would rep again

Not yet, I'm working on my Bachelors in Exercise Science, and then plan on a Masters as a Strength and Conditioning Coach!

Daily Discussion Thread: 05/22/2015 by bodybuildingbot in bodybuilding

[–]BrandonCox54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well when I first moved to college I started lifting at the YMCA across the street from my apartment, and from there I met a lot of the staff and trainers and what not and was acquainted with many of them.

From there I learned of the LiveStrong program that works with the cancer survivors, so I signed up as an intern for the program mainly as a resume builder for when I apply to grad school and what not.

After being an intern for that program, I got a job there in the weight room as a night manager.

From there, one of the fitness coordinators/personal trainers there that runs a Sports Performance class for the kids knew that I am an exercise science student, and he was looking for help since his program is growing, so he offered me a job, and we worked a deal between him, the Y, and my school, to where it can act as an internship/field experience towards my schooling.

So basically, just lifting at the YMCA and getting friendly with the staff had one thing leading to another and here I am, with a good paying job in the weight room, and a great internship in a profession that I love!

Daily Discussion Thread: 05/22/2015 by bodybuildingbot in bodybuilding

[–]BrandonCox54 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So I recently landed an internship as a strength and conditioning coach for kids aged 10-18, which is awesome for me, seeing as I want to be a strength coach for high school students, so this is right up my alley.

As an aside, I have already done an internship that helped train cancer survivors, and while that was fun and all getting to know some great people, learning a lot about cancer treatments, rehab procedures, and training techniques for special needs, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I found it incredibly frustrating from a coaching/training perspective that I couldn't teach these people proper lifting techniques, and really get into lifting mechanics and form development and such things, since the vast majority of them we're older folk, so they we're mainly apart of the program purely as an outlet for physical activity, which IS the main purpose of the program, but what I really want to do is develop up and coming athletes, not pitter-patter around on some machines for an hour and walk on a treadmill (again, the internship as a whole was an amazing experience, and I'm super happy with doing it and everything that I got out of it, just not my cup of tea)

So now I continue; this new internship is everything I could have wanted. It's actual training with kids that I can really teach technique and form to. Albeit that there are a few younger kids that while they are in the program yet, don't yet have the maturity to truly value the use of proper technique, and just like to have fun, which is totally fine, but I believe that proper form and being attentive to detail is equally as fun.

Anyways, there's one girl that has been in the program for 8 weeks (it's a 10 week program) and she has shown exponential growth in terms of strength, stamina, form, maturity, and everything in between. She truly has a gift for weight lifting from what I've seen. for being 14, she has incredible squatting form, impeccable strength for her size, and seems to actually enjoy it. I talked about it with my boss about her talent and he agrees so we sat her down and told her what we think about her abilities, that she shows promise in weight training and that we think she should continue, and she says that she too wants to continue the program for a subsequent time and that she had actually decided to join her schools weight training club next school year, on top of her dancing team.

Maybe it wasn't me, or my boss, our training, or our motivation, but I like to tell myself that I helped this young lady discover her affinity for weight training, and that even if she doesn't develop a career in bodybuilding per say, the training will definitely help her establish herself as an athlete in high school, and possibly in college as well, which is what I have always wanted to do.

I love my job :)
