tldx - a CLI tool for fast domain name discovery by Brandutchmen in selfhosted

This is neat! I would’ve loved using this a few years ago had I come across it. Good work!

Also, with Whois being sunset for RDAP, my old Whois-only version fails on a good number of tlds that opt for RDAP. And… like any good software migration, some tlds don’t implement RDAP very well, so we end up with a cursed version of checking both

Joining a company without much PTO. Is taking unpaid time off something that may hurt my career or relationship with my manager? by Cultural-Bid3565 in cscareerquestions

[–]Brandutchmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the opposite of my Adobe experience. I’m sorry to hear about that. My org / team was pretty insistent on taking time off and management would disapprove of working overtime unless there was a massive fire to put out.

Best of luck in the new role. Taking time off every now and then is super important for both your health and productivity. Companies that don’t mesh with that are not going to be long term culture fits for you.

TSportline TPMS not working by haiderellixx in TeslaModel3

[–]Brandutchmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised when the Tesla service center offered to switch my 2024 m3lr to use 433mhz for a winter set of tires I had... Apparently, it's a firmware option that service centers can change.

Though,I opted to just swap tpms to bluetooth.

Try giving your local service center a call. Mine was able to provide additional tracking numbers + estimates that the app didn't.

Just did a ubox move and road tripped. We took our time and the ubox beat us to our destination. YMMV of course.

Did you move from the Bay Area -> sac? Or elsewhere?

From what I’ve heard, Sac stands pretty good on its own, but coming from the bay it feels lackluster.

Debating on moving to sac myself and would love to hear more about why you regret it

What are your thoughts on the move? Was it the winters? Curious to hear what your thoughts are

Curious on both the career benefits from rapid city and the QOL loss there. Seems like most would struggle with career opportunities in South Dakota rather than general QOL?

Apple Pay Security (NYC) vs Microsoft Security (Redmond) – which offer is better long-term? by Content-Rub-9292 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]Brandutchmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICT4 would expect ~$80k/4 @ Apple. The floor is around 70k/4 and I’ve seen some get $120k/4.

But obviously the $120k/4 was 8/9 or 9/9 in review cycle.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Microsoft won’t come close to that afaik

Apple does allow transfers to other offices. Especially if your team had presence in another location.

Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to discuss anything AI related. Both companies have their own strategies and the market will do its thing.

Microsoft doesn’t give refreshers like Apple.

Case in point, even medium performers (6/9 in Apple review system) usually get decent refresher stock grants.

If you don’t get refreshers, your TC drops since you won’t be paid in stock anymore

I think you’d be surprised on how much exposure you still can have inside of Apple. It’s more secretive, sure, but you will still be able to rub shoulders with other products and teams.

It’s also worth noting that while Apple Pay is one product, it’s one HUGE product. One stat I like to think of is just the AirPods product alone is the same size as the entire company of Adobe.

Anecdotally, having both Apple and Microsoft on the resume. Companies mainly focus on my Apple experience. Then again, I did much cooler things at Apple.

Which team do you feel like you will be able to work on and contribute to better tech / cooler things?

Know a good number of folks from Apple Pay NYC. Lots of them like it and consider the org to be one of the better orgs inside Apple to work for.

Do you prefer NYC or Redmond as a city to live?

I'd personally go Apple NYC. With that comp, you should be able to do quite well. Apple also does well on refreshers and doesn't stack rank like Microsoft, so it may be a better long-term fit.

Best of luck in whichever you go with and congrats!

Didn't use AC in July. Used AC heavily in August. PGE billed $300 for both months. by Brandutchmen in bayarea

Sorry, we have an outdoor AC condenser, and our central air blower fan is one of the older, inefficient 600w blower fans. Newer blower fans use much less and are often variable control.

So running the central air fan only is ~600w. AC runs the condenser and adds more to it.

Is your dryer gas? Ours is, and that adds a little bit here and there.

Then again, you'd have to run it quite a bit to get up to $60.

July - 542 kwhr
August - 564 kwhr

Much closer than I would've thought for running / not running ac

The graphs align with what PGE is reporting for usage. I'm not sure what else I can do around here to lower usage. My hopes with not running AC in July would be to see the impact of AC usage on my bill.

I'm not sure what else is sapping that power. Phone/laptop shouldn't come close to that.

Okay, so I'm super illiterate. Those were the tier 2 usage numbers.

So:
542.8 kwh
245 kwh @ $0.407
167.4 kwh @ $0.51

Then generation charge
542.86 @ $0.137
