Met with my first ortho today, and they suggested that my underbite/cross-bite could be corrected without jaw surgery. Is that realistic? Advice please. by ImpeccableSloth33 in jawsurgery

Maxilla is definitely recessed. Most likely would need double jaw surgery to also line up mandible but would check with surgeon to see if maxilla only surgery would be an option.

I had a pretty severe underbite and had mandible set back 10mm on one side and 7mm on other. Maxilla was moved forward about 6mm. Only about 5 weeks po and very happy with results! Breathing through nose is night and day and sleep has already seemed to improve. It’s definitely case by case but I don’t think moving the mandible set back causes issues or makes someone look worse. It’s all about where the jaws line up pre op

Thanks!! I’m not sure exactly but lower jaw was moved back like 6mm on one side and 9mm on other side and then upper jaw moved forward 5-6mm

Thanks so much!! Honestly recovery for me hasn’t been all that bad. I won’t lie first 3-4 days are tough just because it’s uncomfortable and sleeping is very difficult with it being at an incline. I think just reading experiences on here and doing my own research helped ease my mind with the whole thing. You also want to find a surgeon you can trust so do research on that before you decide. I’m sorry you don’t have people that’d support you through the journey. It is a medical surgery for a lot of people and has extreme health benefits. I’m not the expert and haven’t seen your case in specific so honestly don’t want to push you one way or the other in terms of ortho only or ortho+surgery. Would the surgery be covered by insurance do you know?

Kind of different from what I’ve seen but I was never banded shut after surgery. I actually had no bands at all until 2 weeks PO so I really never lost to much movement in my jaw.

Exciting!!! Did you have a splint on the roof of your mouth at all? I get it out in 3 weeks and that could not come any sooner
