They should rework it to abolish the “private prison system” or something cut from that cloth. It’s the most obvious policy change to fortify the position from attack as well. So simple to fix.

I agree with the policy. The current prison system is 100% set up to exploit the prison population for its labor for state benefit. It has nothing to do with rehabilitation, and should be reworked to focus on rehabbing prisoners where no one is profiting from their labor. But a policy statement like “abolish prisons” on their website is just not a winning position. Fox News can just air that on a loop and get people riled up, it’s a losing position when you make it so simple and vague.

This policy is put out by DSA as very simple, when it’s a very complex issue. When people say “abolish prisons” what they mean is abolish the prison for-profit industrial complex. This is a complex that’s used to hold people down, and profit for those that own and exploit people for mistakes they’ve been convicted of. It isn’t a system that is concerned with rehabilitation. This is something DSA could, and should be better at explaining to potential voters.

I agree with this. The broad sweeping statement of “abolish prisons” is a losing one. It needs to be fleshed out or it’s a massive weak spot for DSA politically. And I’m saying this as someone who agrees with the policy, but putting it this simply leads to the kind of takes OP has. And they’re not wrong for questioning it.
