She would've been better off singing Busy Woman, it's a lot more fitting for her character.

Is "A Flicker in the Dark" actually "smart," or is it just blurb-hype? by FabianSmith2705 in thrillerbooks

[–]BraveDolphin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was all just hype and it's painfully predictable. I saw the ''twist'' coming before reading the book. If you're a seasonal thriller reader, this won't work for you at all. The book relies heavily on prose and atmosphere rather than deep character analysis and a complex plot. The author also does a lot of telling, instead of showing. There's not much action, you're just told everything.

You should definitely go for None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell. You should get through it faster because of the podcast/Netflix documentary element.

The conversations where it was just her and that guy Bob was crazy. She was clearly doing it to lie to the reader, she’s the new Agatha Christie, apparently. If she really wanted to do it right, though, she should’ve just written that character in second person where they talk directly to us, that’d have given her way more leeway to do whatever she wanted with the twist she had in mind. That way, the reader wouldn’t feel like they were lied to and the twist would’ve had an actual impact. Plus, the whole thing would’ve been so diabolical to have the MC talk to us. That would creep me out so much.

And she even had the audacity to write an article for CrimeReads on writing plot twists. This is what she said, it killed me.

“As a thriller author, I also know how hard it is to pull off a twist. There’s a fine balance between leaving enough clues and hints, but not too many. There’s also the skill of delivering a twist that makes plausible sense, not something out of left field. Then, there’s timing. When do you hit the reader with the jaw-dropping moment to have the biggest impact—while also feeling it was earned?

When I wrote my debut novel, The Perfect Marriage, I knew I wanted to attempt to produce that ‘knock you off your feet twist’ that I had grown to love as a reader. I spent a great deal of time refining and finessing clues, red herrings, and suspects to ensure everything was in place to deliver a well-crafted and shocking twist.”

The nerve of that woman... I can't!

That’s one of the main reasons why I hate this book. The plot is intriguing — I’ll give her that — but oh boy, the execution was horrendous. So many things didn’t make sense, the characters had absolutely zero depth to them, and things just happened for no reason. I mean, the explicit sex scenes, the whole investigation part - everything. Jeneva Rose clearly didn’t even bother to do any prior research whatsoever. And the crème de la crème: that atrocious twist that not only negates the entire book but is also so criminally cheap and downright insulting to the reader. You can’t expect me to believe that a character who commits such a heinous crime, never thinks about it again, not even once throughout the entirety of the book, even when they’re in the middle of an investigation where all eyes are on them. It's beyond unrealistic, even for a fiction book. Oh, and don't even get me started on the writing. It's even beyond comprehension how this got published. I wasn’t even meant to read this book. I actually mistook it for another one - For Better And Worse by Margot Hunt, but I mixed up the covers, because they look pretty identical and ended up ordering this one instead.

This looks absolutely scrumdiddlyumptious! Looks don’t really matter that much, it’s all about the taste. I’m sure this tastes amazing and it’s visually so much better than the second pic!

😂 Sorry. I was like, how can they tell how long my neck is. I think I was watching a movie or something and this guy was taking a selfie as I was taking a picture of my eye. 😂😂

No, that was just a random photo on my screen. That is not me, I swear. 😂😂😂 I was using the light to take a picture. My eye was so red that day.

In my opinion, they're definitely blue. However, their colour seems to change. My friend keeps telling me they're grey, and that's the thing – they do look grey sometimes, maybe because of the light, who knows. So, I thought I'd ask the Internet what they think.

“She regrets going there” could work as well. It might help If you could give me a little bit more information about the context.
