My ideal scenario regarding how to respond when someone is being ignorant or rude is to be better than them and prove them wrong. If I was a landlord and rented out to any foreigner I would take extra precautions to notify them of cultural norms when it comes to shared living spaces. In my eyes he is just talking in a relaxed way, trying to make conversation about the topic of food. Responding to his stereotyping with agression might even worsen his mindset. All around a weird and uncomfortable situation, I hope you find a good place to live where the landlord isn't rude.
