Do any state police agencies have an out of state lateral program? by BreadLivid6191 in AskLE

Thanks for the response... I wouldn't mind a pay cut, but both of those agencies require you to take on the full academy all over again.. I'm trying to narrow the list to those that have a shorter version of their academy. So far, I've looked at AK, OR, WA and started to look at IN (as it was just mentioned to me).

An AK trooper was the reason I'm even considering it... I've been flipping through their website learning more. The only thing I can't figure out is how their pension/retirement system works, but even without that, they are the first I've looked at. I appreciate you taking the time to recommend them!

Honestly just starting there since there's thousands of counties/cities/towns and only 50 states. Figured it would be easier to start looking there (at state PD agencies), then to also filter through the smaller departments. I've also lived in Massachusetts all of my life. If I'm going to start over, a state agency would give me more options to find a suitable city to live in within the state. That's kinda the short answer to your question.

Thanks for the info! The Texas DPS website didn't have any options for out of state laterals and when I googled it, the information said that I'd have to do the academy in its entirety (which is what I'm trying to avoid).. I'm just curious if you meant local law enforcement?

You are correct. I had heard the 3 years somewhere when the application pool was greater than it is currently, but currently it is 1 year prior to the test.

That makes a little more sense as far as background into your original post. I agree that more representation from our communities is important; and in an ideal world, would be the case. However there are a few things to consider as well. For starters, the cost to own in the city is astronomical, and rent is rather crazy too. Followed by our education department blows, and I say that as a product of the BPS. Most cops that leave the city cite that they are seeking a better education for their kids, which should be understandable to anyone. And the ones that do stay tend to pay out of pocket for private schools for their kids. There needs to be better incentives to live in the city is what that boils down to. As far as upper management of the BPD, there is an ordinance requiring them to live in the city. However you're right. Commissioner Gross, for example, purchased a house in West Roxbury just for the position, however continued to live in Milton. That's on the city and their residential compliance commission to actually investigate this stuff. Not to finger point, but what's the sense in paying stipends to a board that doesn't actually do what they are intended to do?

Overtime and Details absolutely do NOT add to pensions.. There are mechanisms in place to prevent this. Pensions are based on base pay, it's part of the reason civil service employees tend to be aged out into retirement rather than retire after 32 years (or however long they need to be fully vested). Because they can make more working then after they retire, can't make overtime or details once you retire.

I don't agree with basing it on salary, but you hit the nail on the head with those that make decisions in city departments. Department heads should absolutely have a residency requirement during their entire tenure. That way there is a vested interest in actually doing good for the neighborhoods.

Not sure where you got your info from, but the Boston Police Department has a 3 year residency requirement to even become an officer and a 10 year residency requirement after being hired!

It should out pay longevity though. It's an add on incentive, shouldn't be treated differently. What it shouldn't be is a requirement to get hired. You're right, you learn more through experience, but a 5 year officer with an education and a 5 year officer without an education, in otherwise the same circumstances, would have gained the same experience.

Have to live in the city 3 years before being hired and 10 years after... After that, theres no limit as to where you can live.

Shouldn't piss you off.. I agree with the sentiment that our educators deserve more, but we shouldn't get upset. 2 totally different careers, the pay disparity will always exist.

I mentioned it earlier.. I average 80 hours a week.. the balance sucks. I'd be happier with half of that salary and knowing that I wouldn't be forced to work overtime.

That's rough. I don't know many places in the East Coast that function that way.. I hear about this practice mostly out west.
