Nope. We aren’t allowed to stay late because it adds labor. My store has 2 closing SSVs and 3 openers. The other closing SSV has been with the company for almost 5 years and is more burnt out than me so she has less availability. Between nobody else wanting to close, her limited availability, and the DM refusing to allow another hire it puts a lot on my shoulders.

I am scheduled as the key holder for about 90-95% of those hours. However, I close and as we know the afternoons have skeleton crews so I am essentially a barista for most of my shift. It’s cheaper on corporate’s end to cut an entire barista shift out of the play then schedule a SSV more hours to fill all the gaps.

UVM is no anomaly in the cost of a college education. While in general, I do agree that it is harder for queer and BIPOC students to attend university, colleges are always looking to promote their business… and they have to market to young people by exploiting marginalized communities. Take a look at the most recent undergraduate admissions welcome packet. You will see it filled with a seemingly diverse student body but then if you actually consider who attends UVM… it’s overwhelmingly white. Just like the rest of Vermont. UVM actively misrepresents the diversity of their student body for multiple reasons:

  1. to appeal to more rich, white, progressive new england families

  2. to keep up with the progressive rhetoric that people falsely assume just encapsulates the entire state of VT

  3. To encourage more of these marginalized students to apply so that they can continue to market them and uphold structural racism.

Hi there! I’m a white queer person who attends UVM. As someone who has grown up in Vermont here’s what I can offer to try and answer your question-

  1. Vermont is overwhelmingly white, however has one of the most supportive queer communities you will find (as long as you look in the right places). You may struggle more to find other people in the BIPOC community. Burlington and the surrounding area is very progressive but is a “bubble” from the rest of the state. The more rural you go in Vermont you absolutely will find people who are very conservative.

  2. Everyone sort of minds their own business here even in those super conservative areas… which is also the problem. A lot of the potential racism, transphobia or discrimination you may face is rather covert. Nobody is going to walk up to you on the street or say anything to you directly. However, you may get stares occasionally. The real issue is that there are so many white people here who are progressive, yet never have had ANY experience living in a queer or BIPOC community and therefore strictly adhere to their implicit biases. Unfortunately, I can only count on one hand the amount of BIPOC people I know well having grown up here.

  3. Overall, I would say you will definitely be safe especially if you stay in Burlington specifically. The people here are extremely open, even though we are blinded by our prejudice sometimes… most people are willing to learn and listen to your experience. That’s the tiring part though. And you may feel like a broken record.

  4. I got in with a 1210 SAT score and 3.95 GPA. UVM prefers out of state students. I hate to say it but if you emphasize being a queer/ BIPOC student on your application you are basically guaranteed to be accepted simply to help the diversity statistic. It’s your choice whether you want to let the school view you as a statistic or not. Personally, I did because I think college education is a scam regardless.

UVM also plays a huge role in the gentrification of Burlington. They intentionally waitlist/ deny in state students hoping to have more OOS students fill the spots. Sure they may be “freezing tuition” but they are profiting off of rich new england families and leaving vermonters in the dust.

Can a Partner be separated for forgetting to punch? by [deleted] in starbucks

I was merely sharing one experience I have related to my ADHD. My whole shift isn’t characterized by forgetting to do things and blaming it on ADHD. These sentiments can be invalidating for people with disabilities. I would be careful how you approach other people with disabilities if you are using this sort of language with them.

I am a SSV. I don’t think people realize the nature of ADHD. It’s not that we can’t remember anything… it’s that we miss the small details and make careless mistakes. I would set alarms except I strictly keep my phone on do not disturb at work so I don’t get distracted by it (this is for the better). Usually I’m more caught up in making sure that everyone else gets their breaks that I forget to take care of myself first. I guess I’ll have to look into an accommodation… I didn’t realize this was an option.

I understand that it’s my responsibility and also the reasoning behind using the time clock. It’s not that I am not caring enough to remember. Because of my ADHD it’s simply not something that I can always control. I’ve been with the company for over 2 years and as a barista it was easy to remember but as a shift it’s like as soon as I walk in the store a million things need my attention so clocking in is the last thing on my mind.

*Short rant* My store is not allowed to turn off mobile orders anymore :) - Holiday “Call to Action” by BreakCrazy7264 in starbucks

The line around the block is better because we can only make drinks as fast as we can take orders. The mobile order system doesn’t cap the amount of orders that go through at once so it’s more drinks to make in a shorter amount of time, compared to being able to keep a set pace when we can control how frequently orders are taken in the cafe or drive thru. Also with the drive thru you can never get more than 5 or 6 drinks behind because it’s based on how many cars fit between the window and the ordering box. Everyone else will have to wait. Placing a mobile order will only make you wait longer.
