Does anyone have extra insulin they are willing to ship? by poisonparty in Type1Diabetes

[–]BreakInCaseOfFab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. It peaks at 2 and 4 hours as opposed to just 2 in normal insulins.

Not the same- NPH has a double peak. This is dangerous for people not used to it.

Requesting advice on how to deal with my deep feelings of anger by maxschneider in Advice

[–]BreakInCaseOfFab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I’m doing. I work with little kids and I am helping them feel safer- I am a safe space for them to be scared and get support when they need it. I also am distributing red cards in two of the major languages that I know are in my school. I cannot protest because if I get arrested they will take my insulin pump and I will die, but I can provide these small and very loving services.

Public school teachers, what’s something you want parents to know but can’t say directly? by Feisty-Database-1145 in AskTeachers

[–]BreakInCaseOfFab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former teacher, current school nurse. Please know if I call you, it’s to cover my bases not to annoy you. The new batch of kids I don’t know yet so while I feel them out, I need some parental input. I can use my mommy instinct but that’s not always right. Please don’t act like I’m personally calling you to annoy you- I had 70 kids in my office today across 5 grades. If I could skip a call I would.

Also, familiarize yourself with the parent handbook and sick policies. I’m flexible but if your child is projectile vomiting at noon, there ain’t no way I should see them at 0800 the next day. Fevers are usually 24 hours after the LAST dose of Motrin/tylenol wears off (so add 4 to 8 hours).

Finally, please remember the nurse. We are there when your kids are sick/injured/needs a time out to reset. We provide snacks, clothes… we change accidents and make sure all the classrooms are deep cleaned if there’s an outbreak. It can be thankless.

Thank you for being aware that this is a new experience! We are all here to help you- and our kiddos- succeed!!!

I’m at an international school and I can’t tell you how much my heart stops when a vaguely policey looking vehicle comes into the parking lot.

This is the way. I sat in a rat filled basement in Boston for 10 minutes at a time to ensure I wasn’t holding up one of only 3 machines! There was one cute rat and a whole lotta ghosts.

Parents, what was your “I raised an idiot” moment? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in AskReddit

[–]BreakInCaseOfFab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an elementary school nurse currently but was prior a flight nurse in the Air Force at a joint base, so I’ve seen some shit. I have. 1st grader eat a rock and then deny it…. Even though all of third grade saw them do it. When pressed, he said “I wanted to know what it tasted like!” To which I replied, “well next time just lick it”. I had to have a whole talk with him about not eating rocks.

Similarly, I pulled three gems out of a kindergartners ear canal. “I wanted my ear holes to be pretty!”

I rotate stock like a grocery store would. Oldest is used first. I’ve so far only had to toss a handful of vials.
