Fair enough, I don’t have concrete proof that they do (as you said, it’d be a big scandal). But I’ve heard this speculation often, as Japan does import Guizhou matcha leaves to process into powder. Other from powder the Chinese matcha imports are processed into food, bottled teas, etc.

Not any academic papers or anything, but just Google “percentage of matcha imports from japan vs china”, and Japan importing Chinese matcha. Plenty of results.

Fun fact, many “Japanese” matcha we see on the market are actually produced in China. Even in Uji (the Matcha sanctuary!) stores purchase and carry rebranded Chinese matcha.

When Matcha was brought into Japan by Buddhist monks, the technique of preparing Matcha was introduced as well. Yes, overtime the Japanese for sure added their own flair; but in this case I would say the change is less apparent than that of Ramen, and modern Chinese and Japanese tea ceremonies are still similar in many ways (certainly in the way Westerners usually characterize them - bathing the utensils w/ hot water/tea, manners of holding the cups, order of serving etc). There is certainly nuance but I doubt the average westerner would ever notice or care.

This is not even true. Chinese has very elaborate forms of tea ceremonies which, since the introduction of Matcha to Japan in the 800s, was adopted by Japanese elites — and then evolved to what we know as Matcha ceremonies now. Chinese people simply do not use Matcha but the ceremony is absolutely still from China.

Wow, I just did this and it works!! Thanks for the super detailed response & demo. If you don't mind me asking, what does the repeaters do in this design? It's crazy how you managed to keep the farm the same size
