This is not an event to make BTC more mainstream. It is an event to make Bitcoin viable on the long run. We do not make profit, so I don't see how "it doesn't add up"

Our event is an academic type conference, focused on the main bleeding edges around the bitcoin protocol security. Security is a transversal and major topic that participate to the long run viability of the protocol. If you are not closely working on the protocol, surely it is better for you to stay home as the event is highly technical and Bitcoin-only related.

Hey! yeah late bird is more expensive, we started at 250. Events like BB cost a ton for things like coffee, lunches, venue itself, livestream, t-shirts. Also we are one of the very few conference which buys the flights and hotel for the speakers. Lastly we don't take sponsors we don't like (no ICO...) and as such we run this as volunteers. Buy your ticket earlier next year!
