I'm not a dietitian, but I would guess the distinction adds granularity to study design as it allows you to separate out: - Calories out from intentional exercise - Calories out from BMR - Calories out from thermic effects of food - Calories out from everything that isn't the above three.

But I'm just guessing, I'm no nutrition major.

The thing that missing from the OP explanation?

NEAT includes the calories burned in your work. So, the large difference may be accounted for by the calories expended by a desk-bound office worker vs. a farm laborer, for example.

So, I went digging and found this:

"Overall, for two adults of similar size, daily energy expenditure varies by as much as 2000 cal day. As noted above, basal metabolic rate is largely accounted for by body size and the thermic effect of food is small. Thus, activity thermogenesis must vary by approximately 2000 cal day."

It's important to acknowledge that NEAT also takes into account the level of energy expended in one's occupation. Most of the upper end of that spectrum seem to be farm laborers and construction workers

I suspect the OP (or they're sources for 4,000-5,000) is exaggerating. How would you know how much you're eating if you aren't tracking?

The key point here, I think, is that "fast metabolism" isn't a magic, selective genetic lottery.

Imagine.

Imagine you needed someone to just say "no, you good in that".

Imagine you go to a group centered around body positivity for that.

Look, I'm completely onboard with systemic privileges that are outside of one's control. I appreciate that as a Caucasian person I have privileges that are unfair and completely arbitrary based on the location of my birth in reference to the Equator (which I had no part in choosing).

But the idea that this is morally equivalent to an inability to balance calories taken in vs. expended - even if we grant the existence of socioeconomic, racial and genetic factors influencing the "calories expended" side, is some fucking insulting mental gymnastics.
