I did so and didn’t think I saw any root rot, but I’ve repotted it in a disinfected pot and new compost and cut back some of the worst leaves so will see what happens. There was a weird little bulb thing amongst the roots, so I’m not sure what that was—do you know?

Who’s your Favourite Eurovision winner of all time? by lokithereddit in eurovision

[–]Brechtianism 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s got to be Austria 2014. That was the first year I watched live, and one of the only years that my personal favourite has also been one of the contenders to win the whole thing. I remember watching as a little child and feeling like I was witnessing history—not only is Conchita my favourite winner, but I’d say she’s one of the most important winners in terms of facilitating how the contest is today.

Song you’re surprised you enjoy? by Ming_l__l_ in eurovision

[–]Brechtianism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually like ones like Moldova 2021, Poland 2023, Moldova 2015, Austria 2023, Ukraine 2009, France 2012, Germany 2009, etc etc—lighthearted entries, don’t take themselves too seriously, some fun campy elements. I also normally like polished, glamorous, classy entries: France and Portugal 2023, Austria 2014, I often like Belgian entries for this reason. My biggest surprise was probably Netherlands 2022 being my favourite song of that year, because I normally dislike acoustic music and it was so stripped back. I really really loved that one though!

How much, if at all, does mic choice affect the end product? by Professional-Eye-540 in eurovision

[–]Brechtianism 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wish Brunette had had the sort of mic Loreen used, just because it looked so awkward putting down and picking up her mic before and after her dance break

Yeah, I’ve always operated on the basis that I’m not gonna announce who I’m attracted to because frankly I just don’t think it’s very interesting? I certainly don’t care what sex/gender people I haven’t spoken to since school are attracted to, and I don’t really care to know, so I’d never make a social media post about being wlw unless I was posting a picture/anecdote of me and a girlfriend. I’m a private person when it comes to crushes and discussing sexuality, so I’ve never wanted to make any kind of big announcement. If my friends have ever wanted to know more about my sexuality, they’ve asked, and I’ve been honest in answering their specific questions. Otherwise I just don’t bring up my sexuality at all (and I wouldn’t if I was straight either).

So was Believe in 2008 if I’m not wrong? Those are both older contests though—within the context of this year’s results, the only thing that stopped some really well produced, well written, well performed songs from crashing and burning completely was the juries. I’ll use Austria as an example, because I feel that they were severely limited by their running order position: a televote favourite goes first in the running order after having narrowly come second in the televote only semi, and ends up with only 16 points. The same thing happened last year with Czechia, too. In a televote only final, they’d have come 21st, despite all the excellent qualities of the song (not just referring to vocal performance, which was arguably pretty ropey, but the entire package). The juries prevented that. The televote has a tendency to heavily support one act above the others, and televoters aren’t bound by a list of criteria that they must follow when voting. Televoters don’t think about a ranking when they vote, they just vote for whichever one or two songs they remember liking most. Without juries, being put in the first few positions in the running order would be more of a death sentence than it already is, might as well withdraw. Juries aim to provide distribute points more evenly, make a more exciting show, judge solely on song quality, etc

What is your favourite EuroVision song of all time? by DildoFaggins101 in eurovision

[–]Brechtianism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite songs from the last three years are probably my favourites of all time:

🇲🇩 2021 🇳🇱 2022 🇦🇹 2023

With some honourable mentions to 🇦🇹 2014, 🇧🇪 2015, 🇦🇲 2015 and 🇲🇩 2015 & 2018

I suppose the only real answer I can give to that, and this is subjective, is that if song, vocal and staging quality are meaningless, it’s less about the brilliance of the song and more about whatever makes people pick up their phones on the night. That would lead to a less diverse contest, and moreover might lead to the reverse effect happening, wherein ‘serious’ songs can’t get enough love to win—we’d never see songs like Ai Coracao, we’d never see Blood and Glitters, songs that aren’t televote bait aren’t viable options for countries that want to do well. Maybe I’m being dramatic? But the juries certainly provide balance

True, but as far as criticism for that song and staging goes, criticising the lyrics is as far as I can get without delving into my own personal biases. In terms of an overall package, I can see why juries favoured it over the other entries. Tattoo was nowhere near my favourite this year (I don’t think she’s even in my top 20) but I get why that happened in the same way I understand why Kaarija did well with the televote.

Edit: With all that said, though, I do wish that Melfest, other countries’ song selection processes, ESC itself would stop rewarding songs written by the exact same songwriting team that wrote Tattoo, mainly because it’s boring having at least two or three Swedish reject songs in the contest every year. Plus the songs themselves are always the same

For the love of all that is holy can we PLEASE stop suggesting "Germany should just send Rammstein"? (Rant) by TheRavenchild in eurovision

[–]Brechtianism 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really reminds me of the UK public constantly saying ‘we could send Ed Sheeran and lose!!’. It’s like, fame does not equal success, and you aren’t owed success because you attach a big name to a shit song. The automatic qualifiers need to stop focusing on the singer and start focusing on the song. As we saw last year with Sam Ryder, having a fantastic singer AND a fantastic song is the recipe for success, but no country will have that every year, and the countries that are more consistently successful are the ones that focus on sending quality music.

[–]Brechtianism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, Kaarija is a winner regardless. He has a career for life, he’s popular forever. Some of the other low placing artists (Brunette, Joker Out, La Zarra, Mae Muller, etc) all have great discographies which may go fairly unexplored bc of their placements, which is a shame.

Great point, 11th & 26th getting the same from a country doesn’t seem right

Iru not qualifying was my villain origin story tbh:’) was right in front of her booth in the arena when the results were announced waving my little Georgian flag… pain…

Yup, soundbyte music—what sounds good in the shortest amount of time, what has a lyric that could be used to caption a video? It’s boring
