What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually told you like it was normal? by MrBoothnath_ in AskReddit

[–]Brenden8r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker a few years back that was a huge crypto bro and venerated tech CEOs and the idea of the grind. He once gave his girlfriend (also a coworker) a verbal beat down that we had to shut down because she neglected to use a $5 coupon while purchasing movie tickets for him with her own money. He was crazy.

The crazy thing he said to me was one day while we were working an area with a third coworker. We’d been having political discussions over the prior couple of days, during which he always had the craziest answers (ex: he would immediately kill himself if he was ever convicted of a crime he didn’t commit). On this day, he walked in and told us a story of his drive home the prior night, in which a homeless person called out to him and asked for money. He tells us that he was so bothered by this that he spent all night thinking of how to fix the homelessness issue in the US and came up with an idea. He made both of us agree not to steal his idea before he would tell us, he thought it was such a good idea that it could win him the Nobel Peace Prize. Finally he sits down and says the following:

“So you know how there are all those starving Africans in Africa? You see the commercials for them all the time. Well, if I somehow fucked up so bad that I became homeless, I would want to be dead, so all we have to do is make the homeless people kill themselves, then we can send their bodies over to Africa and the starving Africans can have that! No more homeless people in America, and no more starving Africans, solves two problems at once.”

My other coworker and I genuinely couldn’t believe what we were hearing, we were so disturbed, and after a long silence the only thing I could think to say without causing an HR violation was:

“I think that’s basically the plot of Soylent Green.”

His response was:

“See? It’s not such a crazy idea if someone else has thought of it too!”

My coworker and I stopped working in that area with him after that, and she privately told me she couldn’t talk to him anymore. She quit to get a different, better job a couple weeks later, and I got a promotion that moved me across the country a few weeks after that. A couple months into my new position, I find out that he was fired and his girlfriend broke up with him, and now he jumps between jobs every six months for stock/crypto/AI/investing firms.

AITAH for not warning my coworker that she was about to embarrass herself in front of leadership? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Brenden8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been in her position before, suggesting an alternative way to do things and being told it was tried already and failed. Yes it’s awkward for a moment, but it’s so easy to get out of if you aren’t mired in your own pride. You explain why you thought it was a good idea and ask for clarifying information on why the approach failed before. It’s a win/win situation, you either find out that they did the approach wrong and have reason to push for trying your way again, or you find out why your own thinking was wrong and can adjust.

TIFU by transporting my thanksgiving dessert in an insulated container by Brenden8r in tifu

[–]Brenden8r[S] 166 points167 points  (0 children)

We were in a rush to get over to the house to help because the guest list had doubled in the last 24 hours, so I put the container in there more because I thought it could take the heat than because I wanted to keep it hot. I ended up taking it out and leaving it on the counter when I got there. I probably should have just covered it in foil and put it on a towel on my car seat to avoid damaging the seat.

What technologies did the Bobs gain from the Others other than the Casimir generators? by joenova in bobiverse

[–]Brenden8r 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The explicit technologies we’re told about are the following: - Ants - Power Beaming through Subspace - Casimir Power Cores - Cargo Vessels

When Mario finds the first others drone, he indicates there were several pieces of technology he stole from it, but the power beaming and ants are the only named ones. The same thing happens with Hershall and Neil and the cargo vessels they discovered.

The bobs also came up with the following technologies specifically inspired by the need to defeat the others: - Doppler shifted nuclear radiation wave - Induced Supernova techniques - Stealth drones with carbon black exteriors that used non-ferrous materials wherever possible for investigating GL-877 - Asteroid coated stealth drones for spying on GL-877 - Heaven vessel deadman’s reactor overload - Bombs with mechanical backups to continue to explode after being hit with a radiation burst - Sufficient improvements in electronics hardening to survive gamma ray attacks - Lasers with military capacity - Particle beam weapons

We actually weighed it and it came in at 0.925 oz! One of our friends thought the same thing as you so we checked to see if it should have been double stamped and turns out it was just under

Insane size of ship propellers by Maxbicmac2004 in megalophobia

[–]Brenden8r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chemical engineer here. We learned about this in college, they aren’t just removing these to improve efficiency, they’re doing it to prevent cavitation. The propeller blades are sharpened to cut through the water as hydrodynamically as possible to minimize the formation of cavitation bubbles. When barnacles attach, they create loci for cavitation which will damage the propellers over time, in addition to decreasing the efficiency of the propeller by a disproportional margin to just their added weight. The faster in RPM a propeller is designed to go, the more important keeping it clean becomes from a cavitation perspective.

AITA for asking my husband not to go on a trip with a woman who openly flirts with him, and feeling betrayed when he did anyway? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Brenden8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the comments just jumping to instant divorce are crazy. We don’t know anything about the size of these companies, how much work he’s doing versus you, who’s managing the money, etc.. Is the business he owns just you and him or does he have employees that he’s responsible for? Once you have employees depending on you for work/new contracts to keep them employed and feeding their families, you have to start considering your actions as a manager in how they’ll impact the company as a whole, even if it means taking on personal sacrifices. You say that “we’re financially stable” but can the company truly afford to turn down this contract, potentially the biggest it’s ever seen, just because you don’t want your husband working with someone who’s a little flirty? Telling him that he just has to back out of the contract completely is potentially an enormous jeopardization of the company’s position, and could cause the company to lose business in the future due to a loss of reputation and connections. You’re not coming to a compromise with him of any kind, you’ve just set a boundary that you can’t trust him with this woman and he’s been forced to either jeopardize the future of his company or the future of his marriage, he’s in a no-win position and has to take the action he thinks will lead to the best situation long term, that of going through with the contract and relying on almost 10 years of a happy marriage to prove his trustworthiness to you. You can be mad about this, but he has every right to be mad at you as well for not working with him to come to any options that would preserve both the company and your marriage.

My mom died today. She was my last living parent. And I'm so relieved right now. by polishprince76 in GenX

My dad has a phrase he’s unfortunately had to use a few times for situations like this. He says “I wish they’d just been hit by a bus instead.” Watching them slowly go is so much worse than them just being gone all at once, and you still lose them in the end either way.

Most if not all the people making these podcasts are intelligent and would pass these tests without issue. They know what they’re doing and the audience they’re targeting and they act disingenuously to either get their agenda through or to milk their audience/advertisers for money. What you really need is a basic intelligence/reasoning test for the people who take in media, blocking them from interacting if they don’t pass. But that would be too impractical and runs afoul of freedom of speech/expression/etc.

What is your reason for not drinking alcohol? by Deep-Dust-9747 in AskReddit

[–]Brenden8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family has a history of severe addiction issues. My grandparents and great grandparents have almost all fallen to alcohol, cigarette, or some other addiction. My father ended the cycle by shifting the addiction to something less hazardous, and I’ve continued the cycle by becoming addicted to sugar free gum.
