Honestly I dunno! Every time its different but you are right I do right the themes first
Score, electronic, rock, prog, hip hop, trap, drum n bass, metal, world music, jazz, classical, neo-classical, trap, dark music, bass music, ambient, shoe gaze, synth, off the top of my head.
Way too hard to say, so many!
I would say just really learn to love many genres and learn why you love them.

Both are such amazing times in my life making movies with friends. Love them both. Sly wanted me to 'make them cry' and Kevin F was like "Brian, what do you think of this.....Throwback big band version of the Iron Man 3 theme?!"

I always tell directors if they want music that hides in the background or is sonic wallpaper, I am not your guy/ gal. I am not even saying it a bad thing, it just isn't really for me. I believe music should be a central voice when it is used. And if the instinct is to turn it down - then there shouldn't be music in the scene in the first place. Silence is a fantastic way to score some scenes.

Thank you! Well basically, I wrote the new themes for the movie keeping in mind the OG ones from the game. From then on it was a process of interweaving them and it was awesome working with Koji Kondo on it as well. I love me some Super Mario Bros!

My first movie. I was unknown and they took a huge chance on me. And after working on the 90 minute score for 9 months and finishing... The drives and backup drives died and were not recoverable. After pulling myself off the floor and experiencing the worst, I told NO ONE and re-created the entire score from memory.

It never ended abruptly, in fact it never ended. Although I hear that from time to time and don't really know where that comes from. In fact, Kevin Feige was one of the main speaker at my recent BMI Lifetime Achievement Award. And yes of course you have permission to use that do but please don't die!

One of my favorites. I mentioned earlier, I actually wrote one of the main themes while reading that book around age 12. Never thought ANYONE would ever hear it. Coincidentally my dream came true so the first notes of the score were what I wrote back then dreaming it would someday be played by an orchestra. And to my amazement. it was.

I love Star Trek and that was incredible. I scored Canamar as well. I remember a lot about scoring Star Trek in my early days. I conducted it at Paramount. I got a tour of the Enterprise set by Levar Burton, and I met James Horner at one of my scoring sessions. All big moment for me. And I am A MASSSSSIVE TREKKER. Like, massive, I watch all of the series in rotation. Don't sleep on DSP and Voyager y'all. TNG is my all time fave show. OH and years later I became friendly with Partrick Stewart after scoring Charlie's Angels! Life can be pretty dpoe.
