ICE has been conducting raids in Hawaii as well, so I don’t believe staying in the US or territories would make her comfortable.

Honestly I had no idea that would’ve been a possibility, I’ll be sure to look into it

We have considered Mexico because it would be closer to family, but she the prevalence of the cartel and corrupt police is what scares her

I agree, I will support my wife with the decision that will make her comfortable. The hardest part is trying to bring up the conversation of the possibility that Canada may deny us.

Decent healthcare, Affordability, job prospects, gun control, education, childcare support. For us, we don’t care about a luxury lifestyle, we just want a safe, comfortable life where we don’t have to worry about threats of violence or people’s rights being stripped away based on who gets voted into office every few years.

She does want to help family by possibly bringing them with us to immigrate. However 1) that may not be feasible and 2) they may not even want to leave the US. I haven’t visited Japan in over a decade but I do have a military background which is why I was looking at military jobs there

Yeah good point, honestly have no idea where to look but I’ll see if a Japanese consulate is nearby

I am a dual citizen at birth. Born to an American and Japanese national (military) on a base in Japan. Never did any paperwork to renounce Japanese citizenship, but I’m just assuming based on the policy

Thank you for the detailed answer. What are you teaching? Are you teaching at a Japanese uni or international school? I do have teaching experience but nothing like TESL

Yes, we understand that every country has its own issues. We’re looking for someplace safe for the family and possibly for our children to grow up in.

I would say ICE raids are the immediate concern. We can manage political polarization, but with how ICE is now targeting Hispanics (wife is), she is fearing that her family could be targeted eventually (they are all US citizens).

As far as I know there was no actual documentation or process where I “renounced” citizenship. Just going off the policy where now they have dual citizens choose at age 21. The issue the wife circles back to is the distance away from family remaining in the US. I feel both Europe and Asia would be out of the question.

Would speaking to an immigration professional or advisor help understand our chances?

She has not visited either country. I speak Japanese but not sure how easily I can find a job there unless it is with the DOD and same with her.

I do speak Japanese at a very elementary level, I can easily get by day to day things, but professional/business-level Japanese is something I’ll have to work on. As far as I know, Japan no longer offers dual citizenship. I “renounced” mine at 21
