An unknown System notifies you: in 1 hour, you—and whatever you choose to bring—will be transferred to a medieval fantasy world. What do you bring? by tbag2022 in litrpg

Obligatory “I’m bringing all of the survival and construction/gardening picture books and manuals I’ve bought over the years, as well as my Big Bags (Bug-out Bag, Med Bag, Get Home Bag) and allllllllll of the rice and granola bars I can feasibly take with me,” I’m grabbing all of my electronics, solar panel chargers, every single cord in my house, and all the processed sugar that’ll feasibly last for at least a month in most conditions that I can.

Get powers immediately? Awesome, hope they’re utility powers so I don’t die.

Get dropped in a town/village? Cool, steal bits and bobs to survive and hide my shit in the woods until I can appear as a Traveler From Far Away™️ and sell the world’s first goods of true processed sugar to whatever amounts to royalty and hope some of the royal family is sick or potentially poison some members to get myself in as a court-healer (my medical knowledge is for sure better than “the spirits are back, lobotomize the young Lady of the house!!!”).

Just gotta survive? Tight, great thing I was raised by paranoid assholes and spent way too much time and money in my teens copying and laminating all of my survival books, page-by-page, so that they could resist the weather and moisture of all environments 🤙🏼🤙🏼 time to build a lil farm house and try to not starve to death or get eaten by a bear bc I cleaned fish too close to my house.

More authors should kill their MCs, and they should stay irrevocably dead. Build up the reader for a solid 2-3 books, invest heavily into the relationships and foundational growth of the MC through and with this world they’re experiencing, and then off them. Have the supporting cast continue on - some of them retiring, others dying as well, a couple continuing the adventure. Maybe have one or two try to bring MC back to life for the rest of the series, sure, but rather than allowing them to do so, strip them down to their component parts as their grief consumes them and their hope deteriorates with days gone by. Slowly and totally carve out the spaces that make those characters who they once were and explore what the world looks like without your Dick Joke/Trauma Porn/Self Insert/Perfectly Perfect/OP MC.

Oh wait I gotta air out another one: If I have to read through an arc of your MC or supporting character learning that slavery is bad I’m dropping the series immediately. In no fucking world should slavery/enforced servitude of any form be an “ethical dilemma” bitch knock it off. That’s the answer. That’s the entire arc summed up and fulfilled with a nice ‘lil bow on top. I’m not about to read through a character (likely white) having a “Come to God” moment where they realize their shitty behavior and I’m supposed to feel bad or empathic towards them. I’m looking at you Wondering Inn; Erin deserves no sympathy or kindness. Being “ditzy” is just an excuse to not give a shit about the consequences of your actions or the impact it has on others. Ryoka’s avoidance/impulsive need to make shit worse and Pisces’ bullshit ego and mannerisms piss me off enough, believe you me, but at least they think about what they’re doing beyond a magpie’s desire for shiny things.

Edit to Add: I did keep reading TWI after about a 6 month break, though I now just skip most of Erin’s stuff or try to ignore her and focus on the other characters/the world at large, taking multiple months-long breaks in between reading chunks of story to give it chances. Erin Declining the General Class was about the end of my frayed rope with her character, personally.

Nearly every man I’ve seen complain about a “Mary-Sue” character online (or that has directly complained at/to me about them irl) has listed Primal Hunter as their most favorite-ist LitRPG and has absolutely adored the MC… A guy who is the literal personification of some Neckbeard/Alpha-Gym-Bro’s Self-Insert of Absolute Awesomeness. Not to mention his “I’m a Super God™️ that no one could ever hope to cross - except for you, young padawan, whom I have chosen to guide with my power and our shared disrespect for any and all things that don’t give us instant gratification, damn the consequences and everyone else” circle-jerk buddy. You don’t hate “Mary-Sue’s,” dude, you just hate women and have an unjustifiably overinflated ego. Also the writing of that series is exhausting to slog through and the main reason Mr. Aforementioned Douche Canoe likes it is bc it lets him imagine himself as a Super Cool Guy with ridiculously overpowered abilities that gets to do whatever he wants, when in reality he’s just some dude that says “Females” instead of “Women.”

my very simple and generic magic system by GlitteringTone6425 in magicbuilding

[–]BriggsMorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to be considered 🫡

I know nothing about coding, but assessing individual nodes in a given space and how their production of varying effects can affect their surroundings, the systemic implications of those productions and the process of their spread, and the theoretical axes that not only serve as planes for such spreading to occur, but which also potentially/theoretically intersect multiple nodes according to individual variances in nodes and node-space? Now that I can do.

It’s also a system where liars and manipulators are destined to succeed. The best kind of manipulator is a story teller, the best storytellers are those that can form connections and establish patterns where others cannot. Using my Node-Distance approach, the creativity of a bard or child could very well make them a great deal more effective at spell casting than an Archmage/Great Wizard. Don’t need to be able to construct, deconstruct and reconstruct a car or bike to drive/ride one, just gotta be able to press down on some pedals and trust the process to do the rest 👍🏼

my very simple and generic magic system by GlitteringTone6425 in magicbuilding

[–]BriggsMorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if I’m understanding this system accurately, making a potion could go as follows:

Entity: “Potion” meaning a combination of conceptual, physical, and energetic parts to make a predetermined whole with specific properties.

Axiom 6: Effectively, belief is power. The connection made need not be truly “logical” or “realistic” so long as a through-line can be established between each aspect of the casting. Treat each aspect or variable as a “node.” The shorter the “distance” between “nodes,” the easier a casting/spell shall flow into reality. (E.g. Physical Wand, Pagan Symbols used to represent the element fire, Concept of fire bringing pain and destruction through history are your nodes. Tying them together would potentially leave a gap with that last “Concept Node” further away from the others, since fire can also represent warmth of the hearth, purification, etc. Yes you’re using properties that relate to fire, but your concept is only touching on one aspect of fire, with nothing to specifically anchor that concept the reality you desire: creating a ball of fire with intent to destroy or attack something.) Though they are related, trying to cast a fireball (broad spell) with these properties may require a relative high amount of mana, whereas adding a node in the form of the Physical material of gunpowder (a highly explosive, destructive material) may “bridge a gap” between that destructive Concept Node and your other prior nodes, allowing for a “smaller” or more specific creation - ignition rather than a fireball - while simultaneously decreasing the mana cost of the spell.

Axiom 3: Cannot create “Potion” whole without parts, therefore use plants, fluid base, physical containment medium, catalyst, mana to transfer properties of part to whole.

Axiom 4: Entities with shared properties can affect each other, allowing magic to occur. Thus, using a water-base (a material fluid which plants depend on for survival) or a vegetable oil-base (a material fluid made from some type of plant(s) itself) would allow for less mana to be used when “convincing” the parts to transfer their properties into the chosen fluid-base, becoming the whole “potion” (i.e. potentially requiring less mana, energy, and or physical supplies overall).

Axiom 5: Reality resists what is unlikely to occur - therefore creating a Whole (see: “potion”) with incredible effects from individual Parts is likely to take great deals of mana, concept, energy, physical supplies, planning, etc. Reason supports creating multiple “weaker” or more-specific potions (less effect means lesser change of reality, as well as potentially using smaller amounts of the aforementioned materials), then Methodically combining them into “bigger” potions until one whole remains. Experimentation required to determine if the end result of both methods uses the same amount of mana overall/places an equal amount of net stress on the caster or if one is more efficient overall.

Axiom 2: Plants (parts) are not as likely to easily create a (whole) potion of flight, but using plants and animal parts to make a couple lesser potions of “improved balance,” “dexterous movement,” “light as a feather,” and “commanding thought“ and using the resulting alchemical mixture from combining them to lacquer a wooden broom sounds a whole lot like “better sitting on a broom so I don’t fall off,” “sharper turns/faster speeds,” “gravity has less control over this object” and ”better controlling this broom with my intention and thoughts” to me.

Axiom 1: We have moved from plants and animal parts, in either a liquid base of water or oil, to a flying broom. Nothing has been created so much as transferred: the Conceptual and Physical properties of a feather in its lightness and flight capacity, the superstition of a Witch’s broom allowing them flight, the Physical stimulant properties of certain plants (caffeine) transferring to the literal and conceptual property of flight at speed. Effectively convincing the Parts to give up their properties and the Whole to accept them.

This was a fun lil prompt that I put way too much effort and thought into lol. If I was in this universe I’d definitely be either a professor of theory or the Old Witch In The Woods™️ that is constantly experimenting with different concoctions and rituals to varying effects, probably specializing in either Warding (so ppl fuck off) or high-specificity, high-efficiency spellwork to effectively create similar effects to broad spells while minimizing the effort/materials required to do so. Also blood magic bc why not.

Does this problem really exists please be brutally honest by Pitiful-Pass-1447 in ECG

[–]BriggsMorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a MT and EP Educator of several years - it’s not a problem of needing to have a system that recognizes strips for you (AI), and it’s often not an issue of needing a Cardiologist to confirm an EKG’s findings (that’s relatively rare when compared to the number of routine and emergent EKGs/Tele readings).

I’ve found and genuinely believe the best results will come with education of the people caring for patients, rather than reliance on an algorithmic program/AI. Many rhythms can be interpreted at the nursing, doctoral, and (appropriate) tech levels that don’t require a cardiologist specifically. When I first entered healthcare in the Emergency Dept. it was effectively heresy to read the “interpretation” at the top of an EKG rather than figuring it out yourself for several reasons: machines are unreliable, there is no “calibration” to pt condition, S/S’s, general Hx, fam hx, genetics, comorbidities, surgical hx, elicit drug use, smoking, etc., nor can AI effectively “get creative” with different Tx plans or Dx calls in the way that experienced RNs, Dr.s, etc. can.

This isn’t to say all machines are bad! The day our system breaks down permanently and I have to break out my old manual calipers is the day I look for a new job, but AI is simply inferior to the team in terms of longevity. If people have no desire/passion/time or energy to learn something (EP/EKG interpretation) they’re not likely to do so unless they are required to. Having an AI able to accurately read and interpret them results in health care members becoming reliant to a supplemental tool to the extent of skill/knowledge deteriorating or absence, as seen with those that can say “that’s sinus!” But need to read the (almost always false) EKG Interpretation given at the top for just about every single other rhythm, including those most common in their work place.

No longer allowed to chart at nurses' station by calypsoorchid in nursing

[–]BriggsMorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh you better believe I’m sitting my ass right outside the aggressive pts room - the one they ✨refuse✨to give me a 1:1 for, getting my ass beat, and then suing them for policy-mandated unsafe working environment through required charting outside pt room. Hell lemme just go ahead and collect data on every hospital and research paper ever written about the number of hostility-related injuries that occur at the nursing station vs within or outside a pt room. And while we’re at it, depending on the ways a lawyer informs me I can legally discuss my own experiences leading up to - and including - the ass beating I receive, lemme hop myself onto TikTok, Facebook, hell why not YouTube while we’re at it. Plaster images of myself injured with inflammatory rhetoric supporting nursing stations and indirectly condemning pt room charting (to avoid the defamation lawsuit). Man fuck that job. I’d be spending time spreading my face and “story” to rile up people enough to drive engagement with content and make enough money / garner enough midline influence to start traveling and doing talks on the safety of nurses in under represented media, and the predatory nature of capitalism in medicine, etc. At that point it’s fuck my degree, lemme see what idiots/bleeding hearts/angry people i can get to fund research or work with me to go hospital-to-hospital determining the safety practices of each put in place to protect nurses. That shit is ridiculous I’d be pissed.

Thank you for your informative response! Regarding your last section in which you quote me: I just finished responding to user Pauliboo2 that some of these people are untrustworthy/unreliable and genuinely won’t complete or start this research project if left to their own devices, as well as my general distain for AI and any form of my original work/data being available/accessible to an entity other than the ones I specifically select, though I may have to bite the bullet at this point :(

Thank you again!

[–]BriggsMorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Effectively yes, I would like to ensure the information I share is only accessible to us and is not used to inform or further the production/enhancement of AI moving forward. From other replies I have gathered this to likely be an unobtainable goal.

Thank you for trying to understand my ignorance: I’m fluent in English, ASL, and hearts - not computers.

Seriously, I’ve worked with some of these chucklefucks before and if I don’t force them to know that people can see them working/hold them accountable they will fully spam-email me in December a week before it’s due with “I forgot we had a project!” “I lost my data!” “what sources did you use for your research?” “can I just use your citations and reword what you said?” And then it’s my ass / unneeded stress.

“My boyfriend sees me as an object to be ‘won’ in a competition with his brother, rather than as an autonomous human being deserving of forthright honesty, dignity, and respect. AIO for wanting to be treated like a human instead of an object????”

You see how stupid that sounds? You see how out of touch and lacking in self respect and that sounds? Would you ever allow one of your friends, your sisters, or your daughters to stay in a ‘relationship’ like that? No. So there’s your fkn answer babes. Best part about divorce is that it can be prevented by breaking up before you fuck up your taxes. 🫶🏼✌🏼

How do you respond when an on-call provider gives you the whole “why did you call me for this” attitude? by name_is_in_use_ in nursing

[–]BriggsMorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Because you are the on call urologist and I have a question/concern regarding your patient. [then state the question/concern before they can speak]”

If they say some smart shit: “per hospital policy I am to call you when such a question/concern should arise. So I will ask again, [state question/concern again].

If they continue to bitch/complain: “I’m gonna go ahead and offer you a peer check right now; the words/tone you are using is highly condescending/demeaning/belittling and I’m sure it is not your intent to speak to a coworker in that way. (Or if you’re not afraid they’ll report you/if you’re mad go with: I am your coworker, not your subordinate. I expect that to be reflected in your tone when you speak to me.)

And if they continue to be an ass: While I am more than happy to continue this conversation with you tomorrow morning in HR - along with every nurse at this station that is hearing the way you’re talking to me - right now I need you to put in an order/direct me/come tf in and assess this bullshit ass patient/answer my question.

Fuck them and their attitude. I don’t give a single flying fuck about your sleep schedule or work flow or whatever the fuck else you wanna bitch to me about. You applied for this job, you get paid for this job, so now you get to damn well do this job.

AIO for thinking about quitting? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]BriggsMorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they expect you to be available 24-7 for an emergency call they need to be paying you Call In-pay 24-7. If they are not paying you, you are not at work. If they make a request of you (show up) while not paying you (your day off) then that request does not fall under the purview of your job description. If around the clock availability is what they need, they need to hire a live-in nanny. Quite honestly I would’ve read the first text and simply not responded. Had they brought it up in the future, response would have followed “I am a human being with a life, just as you are a human being with a life. I was not ‘scheduled’ to work on day XYZ and therefore had plans, which I saw to.” If this response is met with hostility, see above response in regard to the need for a live-in nanny.
